Marquette 16, Gwinn 0

On Wednesday at Marquette, the Sentinels got off to a quick start to support a pair of sharp pitchers.

MSHS scored 10 runs in the first inning and ended the game after three innings due to the 15-run rule.

Alex Brennan started on the pitcher’s mound for Marquette and went 1 1/3 innings, not allowing a hit with one walk and four strikeouts. Sullivan Duke finished off the final 1 2/3 innings, also not allowing a hit as he also didn’t walk anyone and fanned four.

The Sentinels collected 12 hits and nine walks off a trio of Modeltowners’ pitchers as Gwinn committed two errors to none for Marquette.

Ian Sheltrow, Evan Brown and Jake Toyras all went 2 for 2 for the Sentinels in their limited at-bats, with Brown and Toyras both also getting a double. Duke and teammates Desmond Gleason, Gib Jezewski, Drew Erickson and Trey Niemi had one hit apiece, Erickson’s being a double.

In the big first inning, Gleason hit a two-run single, Toyras got an RBI single and Easton Jezewski brought in a run when he was hit by a pitch. Then Sheltrow and Gib Jezewski each hit two-run singles, between them Brown drawing a bases-loaded walk. And it was finished off by Toyras geting an RBI double.

Sheltrow added a two-run single in the second to make it 12-0, while in a four-run third, Duke hit a two-run single with an error bringing in another runner.

Marquette also stole 11 bases, including four by Toyras and two each by Gleason and Gib Jezewski.

Marquette 10, Menominee 3

On Thursday at Menominee, the Sentinels built a 6-0 lead before the host Maroons attempted a comeback with a three-run fifth. But Marquette added two runs in both the sixth and seventh to hold off their hosts.

Gleason was dominant on the mound, going all seven innings as he allowed just one earned run on three hits as he walked one and struck out 10.

Gleason was also the only hitter for either team with more than one hit as he was 2 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and a walk.

Toyras hit a double, walked and scored a run, while Sheltrow, Brown and Niemi each singled. However, Brown collected four RBIs, while Sheltrow walked twice and Gib Jezewski had both a sacrifice fly and was hit by a pitch.

Marquette’s two-run first inning was highlighted by Brown’s RBI single, while its two-run second included a Sheltrow single down the right field line and error, each scoring a run.

Dylan Beal started and took the pitching loss for Menominee, allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk as he didn’t fan anyone. Teammate Garrett Carlson had a hit and two RBIs.
