Sentinels have eventful days while sweeping twinbills

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School baseball team had a rather unusual day on the diamond Saturday as they wrapped up their second doubleheader sweep in three days to improve to 6-1 this season.

After sweeping Westwood on Thursday, the first odd thing on Saturday was moving the pair of games to Negaunee’s Irontown Field.

Then the schedule was rather unusual, with two different teams coming to play the Sentinels that day.

And finally, when it was all said and done, Marquette won twice but only technically finished one of the games.

That was because it was pointed out partway through a game against Alpena that the Wildcats had used a pitcher who wasn’t working with the proper rest as laid out by MHSAA rules.

Though that game went on under protest by MSHS manager Mark Pantti, it was discovered not long afterward that the state rules was broken and the game declared forfeited to Marquette.

After MSHS hosted Escanaba on Monday, the Sentinels are off until Thursday afternoon when they play a doubleheader at Kingsford at 4:30 p.m. EDT.

Here is a rundown of Marquette’s recent action:

Marquette 2, Westwood 0

In the opener on Thursday in Marquette, the Sentinels rode a masterful pitching performance by starter Alex Brennan and reliever Ian Sheltrow.

Together, they allowed just one single, which was allowed by Brennan as he went 3 2/3 innings with no walks and eight strikeouts. Sheltrow went the final 2 1/3 innings, no-hitting the Patriots with no walks and two K’s.

The Sentinels got all the offense they needed in the bottom of the first, which worked well as they wouldn’t score again.

A pair of groundouts by Desmond Gleason and Gib Jezewski each brought a run in after Sheltrow and Wes Robinson early got singles.

Easton Jezewski had Marquette’s only other hit as the unidentified Westwood pitcher allowed just one earned run on three hits in five inning as he walked no one and fanned nine.

Marquette 10, Westwood 0

In Thursday’s nightcap, with Westwood the home team, Marquette found its latest model of hitting shoes, or more accurately, its running and walking shoes.

The Sentinels reached double-digit runs despite collecting just seven hits — including a Gib Jezewski double — by drawing a half-dozen walks and stealing seven bases.

Sheltrow did a little of everything from his leadoff spot in the order, getting one single, two walks and three stolen bases.

A trio of Marquette pitchers combined to no-hit Westwood — Aidan Mason, who went the first two innings, Jameson Sandstrom, who added in the next three innings, and Jake Toyras, who went the final inning.

Mason and Sandstrom each walked two batters, while Sandstrom struck out seven and Mason and Toyras fanned three apiece.

Easton Jezewski collected three RBIs despite not getting a hit nor drawing a walk, while Robinson had two RBIs with a walk but no hit.

Finally, Gib Jezewski, Toyras and Brennan joined Sheltrow in scoring two runs each.

Interestingly, the Sentinels scored in all seven innings, including two runs in the second and fourth and three runs in the sixth.

Marquette 11, Houghton 1

On Saturday at the Marquette Quadrangular, the home team opened with a pair of big innings that allowed the Sentinels to end this game after six innings.

In the four-run second, Brennan brought a run home with a fielder’s choice while a big error plated three additional runs.

Then in the five-run fifth, Drew Erickson cracked a two-run single and Gib Jezewski an RBI single with another error letting in two more.

The Sentinels were again efficient, parlaying seven hits, the only extra-base one a double by Gleason, by drawing seven walks and three hit batsmen while stealing three bases.

Erickson was one of seven MSHS batters with a hit, but he was the only one with two RBIs. Sheltrow, Toyras, Sully Duke and Easton Jezewski each scored twice along even as the latter never had an official at-bat. That was because he drew three walks and was hit by a pitch.

Brennan went all six innings on the mound for Marquette, scattering five hits, all singles, and giving up only an unearned run as he walked one and struck out eight.

Marquette 2, Alpena 0

In this game that officially goes down as a forfeit at the Marquette Quadrangular, both teams scored plenty of runs during play.

Evan Tessmer was brought into the game to pitch for Alpena in the fourth during a Sentinels rally, and he extinguished those flames.

But Pantti pointed out to the umpires that Tessmer had thrown 78 pitches three days earlier in a game downstate, with the blue crew continuing the game with Pantti’s protest registered.

As it was shown afterward that the accusation was apparently true, the game eventually became forfeited.

However, the Wildcats had scored at least three runs in the first three innings, though Marquette answered with five runs on just two hits in the top of the seventh. That rally was spurred by Toyras drawing a bases-loaded walk, an Easton Jezewski sacrifice fly RBI and several errors plating another three.

Colton Anderson and Mason were among MSHS pitchers, who got help from its defense turning two double plays.

Sheltrow went 2 for 4 at the plate as Gleason, Sandstrom, Toyras and Easton Jezewski each had an RBI
