Northern Michigan University track stars headed to sunny southern California

MARQUETTE — Any snowstorm that hits the central Upper Peninsula this week won’t affect the Northern Michigan University women’s track and field team.

At least not once they get out of town and on a jet plane to Los Angeles, where some members of the team could be at any of five meets in the California region.

The meets begin tonight and wrap up Saturday.

At 5 p.m. EDT today, Northern’s Beverly Harper and Lamar Gordon will run the 800-meter run at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, with Gordon also scheduled for the 1,500 on Friday.

Today will also be the Cal State Twilight in Los Angeles itself as the Wildcats’ Alayna Vandegriff will compete in the triple jump starting at 6:30 p.m. EDT.

The Pacific Coast Intercollegiate goes on at Long Beach, also throughout today, with NMU’s Crystal Walker, Ahna Larson, Ciara Ostrenga of Escanaba and Ellyse Wolfrath scheduled for two events apiece.

Also today along with Friday is the University of La Verne Leopard Invitational in La Verne. today, Dani Van Lente, Emma Sweeney, Skylar Grubb and Sophia Potter run, while each will be in the 5,000 on Friday night.

Then at the Beach Invite in Long Beach on Saturday, the quartet at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate will run in the 4-by-100 relay, with they and Harper scheduled for several other individual events and relays.
