Marquette Sentinels softball bounces back to gain split
KINGSFORD — The Marquette Senior High School softball team bounced bask from a tough walkoff loss to Kingsford to earn a split of a doubleheader played at the Flivvers field in Kingsford on Thursday.
Kingsford scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take an 8-7 victory in the opener, especially tough for MSHS as it scored three in the top of the inning to pad what had been a 4-3 lead.
But the Sentinels found their bats were still full of hits as they pounded out 15 hits in the nightcap, including four doubles, to take a 16-9 win.
Marquette hosts doubleheaders today and Tuesday afternoon, playing Ishpeming today and Gwinn on Tuesday.
Here are details from each game:
Kingsford 8, Marquette 7
In the opener, Marquette actually outhit the Flivvers 8-7, which included a double by Charlye Swajanen as she went 3 for 4 while going the distance on the pitching rubber.
There, she pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs — but only three earned — on seven hits while walking three as she struck out three.
Teammate Halle Haynes matched Swajanen in hits, going 3 for 3 with three runs scored as she was also hit by a pitch.
Eva Dewitt, despite not getting a hit, collected three RBIs as she had a first-inning sacrifice fly and third-inning bases-loaded walk.
Those two early runs gave Marquette a 2-0 lead before Kingsford got a run in the fourth. Then both teams scored twice in the fifth, leaving the visitors still with a 4-3 lead before the big offensive seventh inning.
Marquette 16, Kingsford 9
In the nightcap, the Sentinels fell behind 5-1 after one inning before they scored five runs in the second and three more in the third to take a 9-7 lead entering the fourth.
Though Marquette didn’t score again until the sixth and final inning, it was that late rally that sealed the result as MSHS punched in seven more runs.
Pitcher CeCe Fuller was the recipient of her teammates’ offense as she went six innings, allowing nine runs (five earned) on 11 hits and two walks as she fanned one.
At the bottom of the lineup, Sammi Trapani led Marquette, going 3 for 3, including a double, with two RBIs, three runs scored, a walk and a stolen base.
Haynes, Layla Roman and Keira Lindberg each had two hits for the Sentinels, Haynes and Lindberg each clubbing a double. Haynes also had two RBIs and three runs scored, while Lindberg had two RBIs and a run and Roman an RBI and a run.
Swajanen also had a double, while Ady Trapani scored twice and stole a base.
Haynes cracked a two-run single in a second inning that gave MSHS a temporary lead, then Sammi Trapani singled down the right field line in the third that helped the Sentinels take the lead for good.
In the sixth, Marquette’s Nora Skytta, Sammi Trapani, Ady Trapani, Swajanen and Lindberg all produced RBI hits.
