Far-flung group of half-dozen area girls make All-U.P. teams in Division 4
MARQUETTE — The half-dozen area girls basketball players who received All-Upper Peninsula recognition in Division 4 were an interesting mix of youth and experience.
Coming from four schools, they include three seniors, a junior, but also two freshmen.
Voting took place Monday at Northern Michigan University in Marquette by members of the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.
The lone area player reaching the Division 4 First Team was the “middle child” — 5-foot-4 junior Kara Roberts of Baraga. She’s in the middle as all the other area honorees are seniors and freshmen.
The Vikings put together a solid 16-7 record that included a win over Division 3 state semifinalist Calumet and splits with next-door neighbor L’Anse and the Copper Country’s Lake Linden-Hubbell.
Roberts averaged 19.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.5 steals per game as she made 36% from the field.
Five more players from three teams in three counties were included on the Second Team.
In the middle again, this time Alger County, was Munising 5-9 senior Bailey Corcoran and 5-11 freshman Addie Bowerman.
Corcoran, who finished her high school career with 1,263 points, provided veteran leadership to a 20-5 Mustangs team that opened the season 14-0 before running into larger opposition like Marquette, Ishpeming and Gwinn, each losses of between four and seven points.
Corcoran averaged 17.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game this season, earning Skyline Central Conference First Team honors for the third straight season after getting Second Team in the league as a freshman.
Bowerman, playing center for Munising, averaged 21.2 points and 9.2 rebounds each outing, earning Skyline Central First Team plaudits.
In an interesting twist, the two Second Team honorees from L’Anse were also a senior and a freshman, but each earned exactly 10 votes from the panel.
Senior Brooklyn Dompier led the Purple Hornets to an 18-6 record, which included an 11-game win streak immediately following a season-opening loss at Division 3 Houghton.
Dompier averaged 15.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.1 steals a game as she shot 40% from the field.
On the other end of experience, 5-8 freshman Kwynn Voskuhl averaged 14.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals a game. Plus she shot 50% from the field, including 30% on 3-pointers.
The area Second Teamers are rounded out by Newberry 5-7 senior Allie Whalen.
The Indians put together a 16-7 season, finishing second in the Eastern U.P. Conference to St. Ignace, who they bowed out to in the D-4 regionals.
Whalen, a First Team honoree in the EUP who broke 1,000 career points, averaged 15.8 points, four rebounds, 3.2 steals and 1.3 assists per game.
