Conferences bestow honors on many high school girls basketball players

MARQUETTE — A number of area girls basketball players won honors when area high school conference announced awards as their seasons were winding down.

Taking a look back at awards handed out by the Great Northern Conference, Western Peninsula Athletic Conference and Mid-Peninsula Conference, two representatives from Negaunee won top awards.

Miners senior Aubrey Johnson was named Player of the Year in the West PAC and Defensive Player of the Year in that conference along with the M-PC.

Her coach, Mike O’Donnell, earned Coach of the Year in both the West PAC and M-PC.

With each league’s Player of the Year not eligible to be named to their respective conference First Team, the entire M-PC First Team was made up of Marquette County players, led by Johnson.

She was joined by Westwood senior Lexi Olson, Ishpeming junior Jenessa Eagle, Gwinn sophomore Makayla Delmont and Negaunee sophomore Gretel Johnson.

The West PAC First Team didn’t include Aubrey Johnson after she won Player of the Year, but had three county players — Olson, Eagle and Gretel Johnson.

Those leagues were a lot easier for Marquette County team to dominate as a majority of the M-PC and nearly half the West PAC includes Negaunee, Ishpeming, Westwood and Gwinn.

But Marquette is the only local member of the GNC, and Sentinels senior Bri Anderson was the area representative on that league’s First Team.

Making the GNC Second Team were Marquette senior Aubree Blackburn and junior Lexi Curran, while Anderson and Blackburn earned spots on the GNC Defensive Team.

By the way, Lillie Johnson swept just about every major award she was eligible for as her Gladstone Braves are the only school that is a member of both the GNC and M-PC.

She was Player of the Year in both those leagues, along with Defensive Player of the Year in the GNC, while her coach Andy Cretens earned Coach of the Year in the GNC.

In the M-PC, Lillie Johnson, Eagle and three other Marquette County players took up every spot on its All-Defensive Team — Ishpeming senior Laynie Korpi, Westwood junior Addy Hallum and Negaunee sophomore Keira Waterman.

And in the M-PC, the six-member All-Defensive Team included Marquette County’s Eagle, Delmont, Waterman and Hallum.

Here are all those honor teams, listed with year and position where available:
