Baraga, L’Anse, Newberry players win All-Upper Peninsula Division 4 boys basketball honors

MARQUETTE — Three boys players from opposite ends of The Mining Journal’s daily coverage area won Division 4 Second Team honors when All-Upper Peninsula honors were determined by the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association at Northern Michigan University last Monday.

One of them was Daniel Connor of the resurgent Baraga Vikings, which put together a 15-7 record this season.

A junior, he posted averages of 18 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, 1.5 blocked shots and one steal per game.

He was termed as a “graceful player with size” during his nomination.

Connor and freshman Sam Lee of L’Anse (10-14) tied for the second-most votes for what became a 12-member D-4 Second Team by the UPSSA. This honor group was established for 10 players, but with a three-way tie for the last spot it was opened up to an even dozen.

Lee posted averages of 21.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, two assists and two steals with his nominator terming him a “heckuva shooter.”

And 5-10 Newberry junior guard Kegan Martin also earned Second Team laurels on an Indians team that went 11-9.

A First Team honoree in the Eastern U.P. Conference, he averaged 16.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.1 steals and two assists per game.
