No luck involved: ‘Lucky 7’ from Northern Michigan University basketball teams honored for athletics, academics

MARQUETTE — Seven basketball players from the Northern Michigan University men’s and women’s teams have earned Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Communicators organization, NMU Sports Information announced on Tuesday.
The four from the Wildcats’ women’s team are Alyssa Hill, Sarah Newcomer, Alyssa Nimz and CJ Romero, while the three from NMU men’s squad are Jackson Dudek, Dylan Kuehl and Sam Privet.
The CSC’s 2024-25 Academic All-District men’s and women’s teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.

Hill, a Negaunee High School graduate who transferred to Northern from Bemidji State last offseason, is a 6-foot-1 junior forward who compiled a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in accounting at NMU.
During the past season, she started all 32 games, averaging 7.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. That included a season-high 19 points when she made 8 of 9 shots against Ferris State on Feb. 15, to go with an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double that led the Wildcats to victory to open the NCAA Division II Midwest Region tournament over Hillsdale on March 14.
Newcomer is a 5-10 junior guard from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, who has a near-perfect 3.96 GPA in business.
Like Hill, she started all 32 games for Northern and was named to the GLIAC Second Team in the postseason. She finished third in Wildcats’ scoring at 8.9 points per game to go with 2.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists per contest.
She finished fourth in the conference making 1.9 3-pointers a game, scoring a season-high 22 points with six triples on Nov. 24 against St. Cloud State.

Nimz is a 6-1 senior forward from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, who attained a 3.87 GPA in public relations.
She also started all 32 NMU games, averaging 8.3 ppg and leading the Wildcats at 6.4 rebounds per outing. She scored a career-high 18 points on Jan. 13 vs. Roosevelt.
Romero is a 5-4 junior guard from Brookfield, Wisconsin, with a 3.75 GPA in marketing.
She started 21 games this past season and played in 31 of 32 games, averaging 4.0 ppg, 2.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists each contest, tying a career-high with 10 points on Nov. 9 vs. Lewis.

Dudek is a 6-7 junior from Kimberly, Wisconsin, who has a 3.72 GPA in financial management at NMU.
He started 14 games this past season, all games after the calendar turned to 2025 when the Wildcats went 10-4. He helped guide Northern to the GLIAC Tournament title, and in so doing, was named Tournament MVP after averaging 15.7 ppg and shooting 68% from the field in three tourney games, including a game-high 19 points vs. Lake Superior State in the championship contest.
Overall, he averaged 8.7 ppg and 4.4 rebounds while shooting 53.7% from the floor.
Kuehl is a 6-6 junior forward from Iron Ridge, Wisconsin, who had a 3.50 GPA majoring in construction management.
He earned his third consecutive spot on both the GLIAC First and All-Defensive teams in the wake of this past season.
Kuehl started all 32 games and starred in conference play as the only player in the league to score in double figures in every GLIAC game, averaging 17.6 ppg over those 20 contests. In all game, he averaged 16.3 ppg and 6.8 rebounds while shooting 49.7% from the field.
Privet is a 6-9 junior forward from Caledonia, Minnesota, who has a 3.89 GPA in construction management at NMU.
He also started all 32 games last season, finishing second for the Wildcats with both his 9.8 ppg and 5.3 rebounds each time out. He scored in double figures in 15 games with a career-high 22 points against Illinois-Springfield on Nov. 16. He added an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double on Nov. 30 vs. Concordia Wisconsin.
