MHSAA Division 1 boys basketball district championship game at Marquette postponed to this afternoon
MARQUETTE — The MHSAA Division 1 district championship boys basketball game involving Marquette Senior High School has been postponed until 5 p.m. today.
The Sentinels host Traverse City West in the Barb Crill Gymnasium at the school with an MHSAA trophy and a berth in next week’s regional tournament on the line.
The game was originally set for Friday night, as was just about every boys district championship game this week.
While no official reason was given for the postponement, it would seem weather was the likely culprit as the winter storm expected to batter the Upper Peninsula was supposed to affect the northern Lower Peninsula, too.
Today’s teams both have impressive records.
Marquette is 20-3, having had an 18-game winning streak snapped in a loss at Kingsford last week before rebounding with a 93-62 win over Petoskey to open the districts on Wednesday.
The loss to the Flivvers forced the Sentinels to share the Great Northern Conference title with Kingsford, each having a 7-1 league mark.
TC West is 19-4, which includes a 9-1 record in the Big North Conference and a 12-game winning early in the season, the second win in that streak a 70-65 home win over Marquette on Dec. 6.
The Titans opened district play with a 68-36 home win over crosstown rival TC Central on Wednesday.
The winner of today’s game advances to a Division 1 regional to play Cadillac or Mount Pleasant in the semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Gaylord.
The regional final is also scheduled for Gaylord and will be at 7 p.m. Thursday. That game could include Flint Carman-Ainsworth, Saginaw United, Rockford or Muskegon.
