3 Northern Michigan University Wildcat women swimmers, divers make First Team All-America

INDIANAPOLIS — The Northern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team had a trio of First Team All-Americans honored after competing at the NCAA Division II Championships held at the IU Natatorium from last Tuesday through Saturday.

Those top honors came on the final two days of the meet.

On Friday, Camilla Carbone finished in eighth place in the finals of the 100-yard backstroke to earn the First Team honor, while on Saturday, Anika Wright also came in eighth in the 1,650 freestyle for the same First Team award that is handed out to top-eight finishers in each event.

In diving, Kalina Ceglinski also finished eight in the three-meter event for First Team All-American honors.

As a team, the Wildcats scored 66 points to finish 16th among 39 teams at the national meet. Nova South Eastern was crowned champion with 475 points, followed by Drury with 463 and Colorado Mesa 376.

Tuesday

Ceglinski was the lone NMU diver to advance out of the qualification meet as 22 advanced among 44 competing in both one- and three-meter diving. Also competing for Northern were Abbie Harned and Lauren Plockmeyer.

Wednesday

The Wildcats earned a trio of Second Team All-America honors, placing between ninth and 16th place in any event.

The 1,000 free opened things with it morning preliminary with Annika Geyer clocking 10 minutes, 11.73 seconds for 19th place overall. Annika Wright was 13th in the same event in 10:09.08.

Ceglinski made it to the consolation final of one-meter diving with 378.80 points, then 12th overall for a Second Team All-America honor in the finals with 386.55.

And the 200 medley relay of Carbone, Zoe DeKievit, Mia Strazny and Burrows was 15th overall in 1:42.59 for another Second Team All-American honor. Carbone led off with a 25.30-second leg in the backstroke, DeKievit 29.33 in the breaststroke, Strazny 24.95 in the butterfly and Burrows 23.01 in the free.

Thursday

A quieter day for the NMU women, they still picked up a Second Team All-America honor in the 400 medley relay as Carbone, DeKievit, Elena Curti and Burrows finished 13th in 3:46.61. Carbone came in at 54.77 in the back, DeKievit 1:04.51 in the breast, Curti 55.30 in the fly and Burrows 52.03 in the free.

Friday

The initial First Team All-America honor went to Carbone in the 100 back finals, where she clocked 54.38 in the prelims to make the final eight, then came in at 55.57 for eighth overall.

Strazny was in the same event, finishing in 55.05 in the prelims to make the consolation final in 16th, then clocked 54.71 to finish 11th overall and a Second Team All-American award.

Wright was in the 500 free, finishing in 4:55.21 for 12th place after qualifying in a nearly identical 4:55.28 for 11th. Geyer came in at 5:02.70 in the prelims to finish 41st.

Ceglinski made the final spot for the three-meter diving finals with 444.20 points for eighth place, then scored 462.75 in the finals again for eighth.

The 200 free relay team of Burrows, Abby Keen, Strazny and Curti was 19th overall in 1:33.83.

Saturday

Wright was eighth in the 1,650 free in 16:55.29, also winning her heat, to earn First Team All-America. Geyer was seventh in her heat and 27th overall in 17:24.47.

Strazny earned Second Team All-America in the 200 back for a 16th-place time of 2:01.61 after she swam 2:00.16 in the prelims. Carbone was 29th in the event prelims in 2:02.88.

And the 400 free relay team of Wright (53.80), Geyer (53.13), Strazny (53.07), and Carbone (54,78) ended the day with a time of 3:34.78, finishing fourth in their respective heat and 20th overall.
