MARQUETTE — The Northern Michigan University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be represented by 21 athletes at the NCAA Division II Championships being held in Indianapolis today through Saturday.
Held at the IU Natatorium on the Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis campus, known more commonly as IUPUI, the Wildcat men are represented by eight swimmers and two divers for 10 total, while the NMU women have eight swimmers and three divers, 11 in all.
Northern’s men are GLIAC Male Swimmer of the Year Leo Nolles and also swimmers Alessandro Rosatelli, Gabriel Fulconi, Daniel Khmara, Wyatt Dickman, Daniel Lopez Aponte, William LaCount and Ian Rocheleau, along with divers Ben Schnurstein and Tobie Stiles.
The Wildcat women there will be swimmers Annika Geyer, Anika Wright, Camilla Carbone, Zoe DeKievit, Mia Strazny, Becca Burrows, Elena Curti and Abigail Keen, and the divers will be Kalina Ceglinski, Abbie Harned and Lauren Plockmeyer.
Each day’s session begins at 10 a.m., with preliminary races and diving in the morning and finals held in the afternoon and evening. Fans can live stream the event at NCAA.com.
Diving prequalification was set to kick off the meet today, with all five NMU divers participating. For the men, 40 of the entrants will be pared to 18 in both one- and three-meter diving, while the women do the same, just going from 44 divers to 22.
The only final scheduled for today for NMU swimmers is the men’s 800-yard freestyle relay with Rosatelli, Fulconi, Khmara and Dickman entering as the No. 10 seeded team.
After that, several NMU swimmers and relays will be in the top-10 seedings in certain events, based on times from meets during the season.
On Wednesday, that includes Nolles as the No. 3 seed and LaCount No. 10 in the men’s 50 free, along with those two and Rocheleau and Dickman as the No. 7 team in the men’s 200 medley relay.
The NMU women’s highest seed for Wednesday is their 200 medley relay at No. 11 with Carbone, DeKievit, Strazny and Burrows.
On Thursday, the top seeds are in the 400 medley relay. The men’s team, again of Rocheleau, Dickman, LaCount and Nolles, is seeded No. 9, while the women’s of Carbone, DeKievit, Curti and Burrows is No. 14.
Friday’s highlight will be the Wildcats’ record-breaking men’s 200 free relay from the GLIAC Championships seeded No. 1 at the NCAA’s. That’s LaCount, Fulconi, Khmara and Nolles. And Dickman will be No. 6 in the 100 breaststroke.
For the women on Friday, Carbone is No. 9 in the 100 backstroke with Wright No. 13 in the 500 free.
Then on Saturday, Nolles will be No. 1 in the men’s 100 free, while the same men’s 200 free relay will be seeded No. 5 in the men’s 400 free relay. Plus Dickman will be No. 10 in the 200 breast.
Topping out for the women on the final day is Strazny No. 11 in the 200 back.
