Westwood Patriots, Ishpeming-Negaunee win U.P. Bowling Conference high school team titles

IRON MOUNTAIN — The Ishpeming-Negaunee girls and the Westwood boys teams won Upper Peninsula high school championships after schools in the U.P. Bowling Conference held their team finals at Recreation Lanes in Iron Mountain on Saturday.

There were three divisions held — girls, boys and “extra” teams, the latter for bowlers beyond the top regular team at each school. Most UPBC members had enough bowlers to fill these extra teams, allowing most or all team members to compete at most matches.

During these team finals, each division bowled a qualifying round consisting of two “regular” team games and eight Baker system games. Baker games involve having all five bowlers alternate frames to come up with a single game score.

The top four teams in each division advanced to the semifinals, then the finals to determine a champion. The semis and finals each consisted of a best 3-of-5 Baker match.

In the girls division, No. 1 seed I-N defeated No. 4 Calumet 3-0 in one semifinal, while No. 2 Westwood blanked No. 3 Iron Mountain 3-0 in the other.

In the championship match, Ishpeming-Negaunee emerged as a 3-1 victor over the Patriots to capture that title.

In the boys division, No. 2 Westwood slipped past No. 3 Menominee 3-1 in one semi, while No. 1 IM downed No. 4 I-N 3-0 in the other.

In that final, Westwood upset the No. 1 Mountaineers 3-1 to capture that championship.

And in the X (extra) teams bracket, No. 1 Marquette “A” edged No. 4 Westwood “A” 3-2 in one semifinal, while in the other, No. 2 IM felled No. 3 Westwood “B” 3-0.

In their championship, IM eked out a 3-2 victory over Marquette “A” to capture that title.

Individual high scores weren’t reported from this meet.

This Saturday, the UPBC will hold its boys singles finals at Superior Lanes in Marquette, with a reported starting time of 9 a.m.
