MARQUETTE — Junior guard Jacy Weisbrod of Northern Michigan University was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week in women’s basketball on Monday.

This is the exact honor that the La Crosse, Wisconsin, native earned for in mid-November after scoring 53 points in a pair of wins over Minnesota-Crookston and Bemidji State.

This time around, the Wildcats won a pair of road GLIAC games last week to move themselves into a tie for second place in the conference, only trailing national No. 1 Grand Valley State.

Weisbrod combined for 35 points in a 69-59 win at Saginaw Valley State and 66-61 victory at Wayne State.

Against SVSU, she scored 23 points by making 8 of 13 shots from the field, a 62% make rate, which included 4 of 8 on 3-point shots, along with 3 of 4 free throws. She also pulled down six rebounds.

Two days later in Detroit vs. WSU, she scored 12 points by making 5 of 11 shots (45%) with a triple, also making her only free throw attempt, and adding two rebounds and three assists.

Despite missing several games around the Christmas holidays, then coming back as a bench player with limited minutes, Weisbrod is still the No. 1 scorer for NMU and eighth in the GLIAC at 13.7 points per game.

She is also the best and most prolific 3-point shooter in the league, making 37.3% on her attempts, No. 1 in that statistic, as she makes 2.8 per game, also the top amount among conference players.

Nationally, that ranks here 11th in the nation in makes per game and 39th in percentage.

The Wildcats return home for their final regular-season games at Vandament Arena this season, hosting last-place Lake Superior State at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and the team NMU is tied for second place with, Ferris State, at 1 p.m. Saturday. The latter game is Senior Day and Play4Kay, part of the effort of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund to fight cancers that affect women.

Starting at $4.62/week.
