Marquette Sentinels ski team dominates U.P. Championships meet at Pine Mountain
IRON MOUNTAIN — The Marquette Senior High School downhill ski teams didn’t miss a beat between performances at MHSAA postseason meets on Monday, easily capturing team titles at the Upper Peninsula Championships meet held at Pine Mountain in Iron Mountain on Monday.
The previous Monday, the Sentinels team qualified for the Division 1 state finals with a top performance at a regional meet downstate at Schuss Mountain near Mancelona, and this Monday, they’ll travel below the Mackinac Bridge again for those finals at Nubs Nob in Harbor Springs.
At Pine Mountain, Sam Dehlin put a stamp on his senior year skiing in the U.P. with another sweep of the boys slalom and giant slalom events.
That led Marquette to a 28-point total in the boys meet, far ahead of runner-up Norway’s 62. Ironwood was third with 95 while Houghton totaled 97.
The Sentinels’ Lucy Stern was nearly as good in the girls meet, winning slalom by more than three seconds and finishing runner-up in GS by less than a half-second.
With Marquette skiers popping up all over the top 10, just like they did in the boys meet, the MSHS girls scored 30 points as Houghton was second with 59 and Ironwood rounded out the field with 93.
Five members of each Sentinels team earned All-U.P. honors at the end of the meet.
For the boys, Dehlin was joined by teammates Ben Kuhl and Conner Henry on the First Team, while Marquette’s Brady Audette and Connor Dunn made the Second Team.
The teams were rounded out by First Teamer Eli Heathman of Houghton, and on the Second Team, Logan Holm of Ironwood and Jack Haeussler of Houghton.
Stern headed up the all-Sentinels delegation on the girls’ First Team, since she was joined by teammates Estelle Dehlin, Madalyn Croney and Ava Stern. Included on the Second Team was Marquette’s Anna Bernard, with the rest of that team including Sophia Ruesch of Norway, Bella Gaiser of Ironwood and Grace Schiltz of Norway.
Here are details from the U.P. Championships:
