MANCELONA — Both Marquette Senior High School downhill skiing teams qualified for the MHSAA Division 1 state finals after successful qualifying at their regional tournament held at Schuss Mountain between downstate Mancelona and Bellaire on Monday.
Teams needed to finish in the top three among the 12 teams competing at their regional to qualify for the state finals, which will be held at Nubs Nob in Harbor Springs on Monday, Feb. 24.
The Marquette boys won their team title on a tiebreaker with Traverse City Central after both teams scored 60 points. The top four finishers score in both slalom and giant slalom, so the fifth skier was the tiebreaker, much like in cross country running.
Traverse City West was also not far behind and claimed third place and the last state finals team spot with 71 points.
The Sentinels girls scored 68.5 points to come in as runners-up to TC Central’s 33. Information on the third-place team wasn’t available.
In addition to Marquette and the two Traverse City schools, other participants at the regional were Cedar Springs, Grand Haven, Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern, Hudsonville, Kalamazoo Loy Norrix, Okemos, Portage Central, Rockford and Saginaw Heritage.
There are three regionals in Division 1, so nine full teams will take part in the state finals, along with top individual skiers whose schools didn’t qualify.
Here are details from the boys and girls meets:
Sam Dehlin leads boys
As he has been doing most of the season, senior Sam Dehlin led Marquette by capturing the titles in both slalom and GS.
He won by almost two seconds in slalom and almost a full second in GS.
In slalom, Dehlin clocked the two fastest times, 29.52 and 30.42 seconds, for a 59.94-second combined-time total.
Teammate Conner Henry was runner-up with runs of 30.55 and 31.28 seconds for 1:01.83, beating out third-place Trevor Suttle of TC Central by more than a second.
The next Marquette finisher was Lake Skytta in eighth with runs of 31.62 and 32.16 for 1:03.78, followed by Benjamin Kuhl in 12th with runs of 31.98 and 32.51 for 1:04.49.
Connor Dunn was the all-important fifth MSHS finisher in slalom in 16th with runs of 33.57 and 33.71 for 1:07.28. Brady Audette finished just one run and didn’t have a total score.
In GS, Dehlin again led the way with the fastest first run of 24.33 seconds and fastest second run of 25.25 for a 49.58-second total, 0.91 of a second ahead of TC Central’s Rocco Elkins’ 50.49.
Skytta was the next Sentinels finisher in sixth with runs of 25.03 and 26.19 for 51.22, while Audette was ninth with 25.20 and 26.50 for 51.70.
Kuhl was the fourth MSHS finisher in 21st with runs of 28.27 and 26.02 for 54.29, while Dunn was again the important fifth finisher in 25th with runs of 26.68 and 29.00 for 55.68 seconds. Henry didn’t finish either run and was without a score.
Stern tops for MSHS girls
Lucy Stern had Marquette’s top finishes in both slalom and GS, with freshman Stella Dehlin the No. 2 skier for the Sentinels.
In slalom, Stern placed third with runs of 31.81 and 33.27 seconds for a 1:05.08 total, less than two seconds behind winner Quinn Gerber of TC Central with 1:03.22, and less than a half-second after runner-up Erinn Hale, also of TC Central, who totaled 1:04.72.
Stella Dehlin was sixth in slalom with runs of 32.06 and 33.87 for 1:05.93, less than a second behind her teammate.
Two more Sentinels finished next to each other in the standings and just four-hundredths of a second apart. Anna Bernard was 12th with runs of 33.19 and 35.39 for 1:08.58, while Ava Stern was 12th with runs of 33.97 and 34.65 for 1:08.62.
