Westwood Patriots’ Roman Yuhas top scorer at Upper Peninsula Bowling Conference meet at River Rock Lanes in Ishpeming last Saturday
MARQUETTE — High school bowlers from just about every area school rolled individual scores better than 200 during a Upper Peninsula Bowling Conference meet held last Saturday at Red Rock Lanes in Ishpeming.
The top reported score was 233 by Westwood junior boys team member Roman Yuhas, while fellow Patriots junior boys bowler Johnny Jestila added in a 215 game.
A pair of girl bowlers also exceeded 200, both seniors from the Ishpeming-Negaunee cooperative team. Miley Phillips shot 204, while Anna Salminen had 202.
Other 200-plus games were reported for boys bowlers. They included I-N sophomore Killian Ryan with 221 and 214, Marquette senior Carter Williams with 202, and from L’Anse, senior Logan Cadeau with 208 and 207 and senior John Jorgenson with 200.
Also in the conference that day, Calumet senior AJ Dulong hit 217 and Iron Mountain senior Bryce Salo shot 215.
In addition, the Iron Mountain boys team posted Baker games of 222 and 212. Baker-style bowling alternates different bowlers each frame to come up with a single-game score, and high scores in that format are tough to attain as it generally takes all five bowlers performing well simultaneously to achieve that.
In the team matches held that day, I-N picked up a three-match sweep. The boys defeated Escanaba 34-6, the girls also defeated the Eskymos 40-0, while the I-N “C” squad defeated the Marquette “D” team 32-8.
Marquette won its other three matches, the boys downing Menominee 33-7 and the girls team beating the Maroons by forfeit, while the Sentinels’ C team dropped Westwood C 33-7.
Westwood also won its three other matches, defeating L’Anse in each of them. The Patriots girls won 37-3, the boys were victorious 35-5 and the D team downed the Purple Hornets’ C squad 37-3.
The day’s other three matches involved Calumet and Iron Mountain, with the Mountaineers prevailing in each. The IM girls won 35-5, the boys 34-6 and the C team matchup 40-0.
The UPBC has another regular-season meet at Bowl-O-Rama in Escanaba at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. today.
