Several area teams enter, exit U.P. polls

MARQUETTE — There was a bit of movement in this week’s Upper Peninsula high school basketball polls, mostly around the entry points — the fifth-place positions — in each of the four polls.

The Baraga Vikings made the most dramatic entrance, both its boys and girls teams not cracking the top five but receiving votes that could set up top-five berths in the next few weeks.

The Vikings boys are 10-4 and received four votes, three short of fifth-place Norway in that Division 4 ranking.

This team has won five of its last six, including a narrow 58-57 win at Ironwood last week.

The Baraga girls are 8-4 and gained a single vote, leaving them six votes shy of No. 5 Lake Linden-Hubbell in their Division 4 poll.

These Vikings, like the boys, have had the hot hand lately, winning four of five including last week’s 53-41 decision at Ironwood.

A few teams left the rankings, too. Both the Ishpeming girls and Negaunee boys received votes last week in their Divisions 1-3 ratings but failed to do so this time around.

It was a bit curious for the Hematites, who have won five in a row and seven of eight to improve to 9-3, last week downing Iron Mountain 53-41 and Westwood 45-41 in overtime.

Ishpeming also beat IM 54-41 on Monday, though that wouldn’t have figured in this week’s voting.

The Negaunee boys have won two straight, including Monday’s 69-36 win at West Iron County, and stand at 10-4.

The Miners also lost at IM 50-43 last week while later defeating Manistique 75-31.

The only other area team to move in either direction was the Westwood boys, who slipped a spot in Divisions 1-3 from third to fourth, switching places with Kingsford.

The Patriots are 11-4 and had an eight-game winning streak snapped on Thursday in a 58-32 home loss to Iron Mountain. Westwood had beaten the Mountaineers 61-56 in IM on Jan. 3.

Kingsford, meanwhile, won its only game last week, a 64-52 home win over Menominee.

The remaining five area teams in these polls held their positions.

Marquette (10-2) is still a unanimous No. 1 among Divisions 1-3 boys after last week’s eye-opening 105-32 home win over a struggling Sault Ste. Marie contingent.

Munising (12-2) stayed at No. 5 in the same poll, the Mustangs boys taking out Newberry 68-57 and Ishpeming 57-49 last week.

In girls rankings, Negaunee (14-0) continues to be unanimous at the top of Divisions 1-3 after the Miners dispatched IM 67-28 last week.

Munising (12-0) is still undefeated and still stuck at No. 3 in the Division 4 girls poll despite dropping Superior Central 43-23 last week and Norway 58-47 on Monday, the latter a game that wouldn’t have been factored in this week’s voting.

However, the Mustangs did receive a first-place vote, though they didn’t really move any closer to second place in D-4.

L’Anse (11-1) also stayed in fourth in the same rankings after the Purple Hornets zipped past Ontonagon 78-33 last week.

The next game involving a pair of ranked teams, including one from the area, will be next Tuesday when the No. 1 Negaunee girls host Divisions 1-3 No. 4 Calumet.

In last week’s Associated Press state polls, Negaunee held steady at No. 5 in Division 2, even as the Miners are the only undefeated team in that top 10.

The Ishpeming girls held onto 19th in Division 3, while in Division 4, Munising moved up a spot to sixth and L’Anse broke into the top 10 in a tie for 10th with Gaylord St. Mary. In addition, Newberry was 17th also in D-4.

In the state boys polls, Westwood is 17th in Division 3 with Munising next in 18th.

Starting at $4.62/week.
