Marquette sweeps boys, girls swimming and diving titles at Houghton
HOUGHTON — The Marquette Senior High School boys and girls swimming and diving teams swept a dual meet at Houghton on Thursday.
The Sentinels boys won 114-69 while the MSHS girls won by a similar score of 113-71.
The Marquette girls team won all but one event, while the Sentinels boys didn’t take victories in four of them, but in that quartet of events, MSHS finished in second and third places in each one.
“Although the results don’t show it, the meet was very competitive and put up some pretty amazingly close swims,” Marquette head coach Nate McFarren said in an email detailing some of the results. “Houghton is historically always competitive.”
Specific event and swimmer finishes weren’t available.
Marquette has two regular-season meets remaining before the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Finals set for the Sentinels’ pool in mid-February.
MSHS hosts Kingsford and Sault Ste. Marie in a meet at 3:30 p.m. today, while the Sentinels host Houghton at 3:30 p.m. next Tuesday.
The U.P. Finals open on Friday, Feb. 14, with the diving finals, then follow on Saturday, Feb. 15, with all swimming events.
In addition, the U.P. JV Finals are scheduled for Marquette on Friday, Feb. 7.
