Marquette Sentinels girls basketball team bombs in 3-pointers to hold off Kingsford, 46-39
MARQUETTE — The Marquette girls basketball team is edging closer to the .500 level after defeating Great Northern Conference foe Kingsford 46-39 at its home Barb Crill Gymnasium on Friday night.
The Sentinels improved to 3-5 with their second straight victory, also having defeated Gwinn 45-40 in its previous game back on Dec. 20.
Marquette has faced the likes of both Traverse City public schools, Central and West, along with Grand Blanc and local power Negaunee.
“After a two-week break, (we) started kind of slow, but battled Kingsford’s scrappiness,” Sentinels head coach Ben Smith said in an email detailing Friday’s result.
MSHS (1-1 GNC) found its shooting touch by hitting 10 3-pointers.
Leading the way was the Sentinels’ Lexi Curran, who sank three of the long-range shots for 15 points.
But it was teammate Addi Kramer who might garner the nickname “The Microwave” after she quickly heated up in the fourth quarter to can four triples to help extend her team’s lead.
Anna Bortolini paced Kingsford (3-4, 1-2 GNC) with nine points.
Marquette has two games this week, both in the GNC. The Sentinels hit the road to play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Escanaba, then come home at 6 p.m. Friday to host Menominee as the early half of a girls-boys doubleheader.
