Ishpeming-Negaunee’s Miley Phillips best among U.P. Bowling Conference girls with 209 game

MARINETTE, Wis. — Ishpeming-Negaunee senior Miley Phillips led all girls with a 209 game during the Upper Peninsula Bowling Conference high school meet held at the Dome Lanes in Marinette, Wisconsin, on Saturday.

In the meet hosted by Menominee High School, the I-N team won two of three matches against Marquette, winning the girls match 38-2 and the boys match 23-17, while the Sentinels prevailed in a matchup between their C teams, 35-5, according to an email from MSHS assistant coach Maria Virch.

In addition, L’Anse also won two of three, the girls taking a 31-9 decision over Escanaba while the Purple Hornets’ C squad defeated the Marquette D unit 29-11. Esky prevailed in the boys match over L’Anse 25-15.

In other matches held that day, Gladstone swept Calumet in three matches, the girls winning 22-18, boys 30-10 and the C teams 32 1/2-7 1/2.

The day’s other match saw the Iron Mountain boys upend Menominee 32-8.

The other top scores of the day came by boys bowlers — IM senior Aiden Bourassa had a huge 277 game, while fellow IM senior Bryce Salo shot 219, Gladstone senior Matt Meyer 213 and Calumet senior Jayden Nutall 202.

The UPBC has three more weeks of regular-season matches before moving onto conference finals in February and the MHSAA regional and state tourneys later that month and into March.

This Saturday’s matches are at River Rock Lanes in Ishpeming with Westwood and L’Anse scheduled to bowl at 10 a.m. and the Patriots, Marquette and I-N at 1:30 p.m.
