A Dehlin delight: Stella Dehlin, Sam Dehlin lead Marquette Sentinels to alpine ski meet sweep at Big Powderhorn near Ironwood

IRONWOOD — The Dehlins made it a clean sweep for themselves and their teams at the Upper Peninsula conference high school alpine ski meet held at Big Powderhorn near Ironwood on Monday.
Freshman Stella Dehlin won both the slalom and giant slalom races in the girls meet, and senior Sam Dehlin pulled off the same feat in the boys meet.
And they led their Marquette Senior High School teams to impressive victories on the team scoreboard, due as much to each teams’ depth as their own quality skiing.
In a sport similar to cross country running where a lower score is better, the MSHS girls totaled just 27 points as Norway was runner-up with more than twice as many, 58 points, while the host Red Devils had 101 and Houghton 112.
The Sentinels boys were even slightly better with 26 points, as Houghton scored 64 and Ironwood 187.
The next U.P. conference meet is Monday at Mont Ripley near Houghton.
Here are more details about each meet:

Sam Dehlin dominates
Sam Dehlin had a particularly big victory in the boys slalom, accumulating a two-run time nearly four seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
Not surprisingly, he had the two fastest runs of 36.29 seconds and 35.71 seconds for a total time of 1:12.00, with teammate Conner Henry finishing runner-up with runs of 38.16 and 37.58 for 1:15.74.
Marquette swept the top three places and had three other top-10 finishes.
MSHS’ Benjamin Kuhl was third in 1:17.34 on runs of 38.92 and 38.42 seconds, Jude Balding seventh in 1:25.20 on runs of 43.38 and 41.82 seconds, and Jameson Bishop came in eighth in 1:25.93, getting runs of 43.37 and 42.56.
In addition in boys slalom, the Sentinels’ B team saw Sam Uchytil finish 10th in 1:27.50, Garrett Crimmins 14th and Seamus Waite 17th. Connor Dunn and Nolan Dixon were only able to finish one of the two runs and didn’t post a total time.
In the boys GS, Sam Dehlin won by almost a second and a half, getting in the two fastest runs of 28.30 and 27.77 seconds for a total 56.07. Houghton’s Eli Heathman was runner-up in 57.51 on runs of 29.09 and 28.42.
And Kuhl was just four-hundredths of a second behind Heathman in third, totaling 57.55 on runs of 28.72 and 28.83.
Marquette had six of the top nine finishers to complete its dominant team performance.
Henry was fourth in 59.48 on runs of 29.87 and 29.61, while Dunn was fifth in 59.59 with runs of 29.93 and 29.66.
Balding came in seventh in 1:01.52 on runs of 31.13 and 30.39, while Bishop finished ninth in 1:04.21 on runs of 32.44 and 31.77.
Crimmins came in 14th in 1:07.39, Waite 15th in 1:08.64 and Dixon 16th in 1:11.23, while Uchytil didn’t post a full score.

While the Sentinels swept the top four places in GS, Stella Dehlin stood alone for Marquette on the podium in slalom as Norway racers finished second and third.
Both of Dehlin’s victories were by not quite a second. In GS, she actually had the second- and third-fastest single runs of 31.27 and 31.17 to give her a total of 1:02.44.
Teammate Ava Stern had the fastest GS run of the girls’ meet, her second run of 31.10, and combined with an opening run of 32.08 gave her 1:03.18 and the runner-up finish.
Completing the 1-2-3-4 sweep was Marquette’s Anna Bernard in third in 1:04.17 on runs of 32.11 and 32.06, and Lucy Stern in fourth in 1:04.20 on runs of 32.05 and 32.15.
Two more Sentinels also broke into the top 10 — Lyla Isaacson was eighth in 1:05.71 on runs of 33.24 and 32.47, while Madalyn Croney came in ninth in 1:05.89 on runs of 33.06 and 32.83.
In addition from the Marquette B team, Laura Markey was 12th in 1:06.92, Cadyn Grim 15th in 1:07.42, Ruby Burridge 18th in 1:14.00 and Anna Melka 21st in 1:20.40. Layne Johnson completed one run and didn’t have an overall time.
Stella Dehlin held up the Marquette team in slalom even while a half-dozen Sentinels finished in the top 10.
Even without the fastest time in either run — she was second-fastest in both — Dehlin’s times of 42.06 and 42.21 gave her a total of 1:24.27, nearly a second ahead of runner-up Sofia Ruesch of Norway, who totaled 1:25.20 on runs of 43.08 and 42.12.
Another Knights’ skier, Grace Schiltz, was third in 1:25.40 with runs of 41.95 and 43.45.
Then the MSHS skiers jumped in. Lucy Stern was fourth in 1:25.49 on runs of 42.51 and 42.98, Ava Stern fifth in 1:25.52 on runs of 42.90 and 42.62, Croney seventh in 1:27.97 on runs of 43.31 and 44.66, Grim ninth in 1:29.45 on runs of 44.69 and 44.76, and Bernard 10th in 1:30.14 on runs of 44.45 and 45.69.
Markey was 12th in 1:33.65, Burridge 16th in 1:42.48, Melka 22nd in 2:16.57 and Johnson 23rd in 2:28.65. Isaacson didn’t post a time.
