Marquette Sentinels, Negaunee Miners girls basketball teams post wins

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School girls basketball team made a long trip downstate worth it with an opening-game win at Traverse City Central on Friday evening.

The Sentinels prevailed 47-36 for their first victory of the young season.

Marquette started out well, taking a 21-18 lead at halftime and holding the Trojans to just three points in the third quarter to take command.

Bri Anderson led the Sentinels with 20 points, while Hayley Taylor chipped in with 14.

MSHS didn’t fare as well Saturday afternoon, falling at TC West 42-34 as its record now stands at 1-4.

The Sentinels have two games this week before taking a holiday break, playing at Gladstone at 7:15 p.m. today before hosting Gwinn at 7 p.m. Friday.

Negaunee 48, Hancock 31

On Friday at Negaunee, the Miners improved to 4-0 by getting out to a fast start and holding off the Bulldogs.

“We had a great start to the game, jumping on them early,” Negaunee head coach Mike O’Donnell said in an email detailing the result, alluding to his Miners’ 15-3 lead after one quarter.

“To Hancock’s credit, they didn’t quit and battled back into the game by halftime,” he added after the Bulldogs pulled back within 22-14 at intermission.

The Miners found traction again in the third quarter, expanding their lead to 37-24 entering the final period.

“We are still getting those stretches where we go into a funk on offense for long stretches,” O’Donnell said. “Ideally, as we’re through four games, we hope to start eliminating those and play a more complete game for four quarters.

“We are defending well and that is carrying us while we try to find our offense.”

The Johnsons led Negaunee, with Gretel Johnson scoring 18 points that included three 3-pointers, and Aubrey Johnson adding 11 points as both scored in every quarter.

Teammate Keira Waterman added 10 points as the Miners made 9 of 13 free throws (69%).

Alecia Aho paced Hancock (1-2) with eight points.

Negaunee has two games this week, with another two between Christmas and New Year’s.

This week, the Miners played at Calumet on Monday night, then have another road game at Westwood at 7:15 p.m. Friday.

Next week, they’ll host the Irontown Holiday Bash at Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium, hosting Ewen-Trout Creek at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 27, and an opponent to be determined the following afternoon.
