NEGAUNEE — A quintet of players from Negaunee and Westwood high schools doubled up on First and Second Team awards when West PAC Copper Division coaches voted on postseason football awards shortly after their seasons ended.

Four of the doubly honored players were Miners with one from the Patriots.

In all, a dozen Negaunee and seven Westwood players earned various honors, which also included honorable mentions.

Two Miners earned both their awards on the First Team, with one — senior Baron Heslip — also a double unanimous pick.

Heslip was unanimous on the First Team as both a back on defense and as the punter on special teams.

Meanwhile, senior teammate Eli Cody made the First Team unanimously as an inside linebacker on defense while also getting First Team honors at center on offense.

Two more Negaunee players earned a First Team and a Second Team nod at their positions.

Senior Weston Yesney was a unanimous First Team pick at running back on offense while earning Second Team as an outside linebacker on defense.

And junior Ethan Gauthier made First Team as a tackle on offense while getting a Second Team nod at end on defense.

Westwood’s double honoree was senior Preston Argall, who earned Second Team honors at both wide receiver on offense and back on defense.

There were another six Negaunee and four Westwood players who also received First and Second Team awards.

For the Miners, the First Teamers were senior quarterback Ty Jacobson and senior wide receiver Ian Engstrom on offense, along with senior end David Carlson on defense.

Negaunee’s Second Team honors go to junior center Braylon Hakkarinen, senior wide receiver Brady Mager and senior fullback Hank Tincknell, all on offense.

For the Patriots, senior tight end Tristan Miller won First Team honors, while on the Second Team were junior running back Louis Salmi and junior quarterback Ethan Marta on offense, along with senior lineman Jayce Patron on defense.

Two more players from each of these teams also earned honorable mention, defensive lineman Alec Smith and tight end Carson Belanger of Negaunee, plus defensive lineman Ben Salzwedel and offensive lineman Keighan Scott of Westwood.

The West PAC’s Copper Division consists of eight of the largest-enrollment schools in the overall league. In addition to Negaunee and Westwood, Copper Division members are Kingsford, Menominee, Calumet, Houghton, Hancock and Gladstone.

Division champ Kingsford also won the most special awards — Mark Novara was named Coach of the Year, senior Gavin Grondin the Offensive Player of the Year and senior Mason Tappy as Defensive Player of the Year.

Two other special awards were captured by league runner-up Menominee — senior Lucas Thoune as Lineman of the Year and junior Dawson Bardowski as Special Teams Player of the Year.

Negaunee finished with a 6-4 overall record, including a 23-16 MHSAA Division 6 playoff loss at Boyne City, and was 5-2 in the division. Westwood was 4-5 and 2-5.
