Marquette Blues make most of 8 singles to sweep American Legion baseball home doubleheader from Menominee on Tuesday

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Blues used plenty of errors, walks and stolen bases to make the most of eight hits in a doubleheader sweep of Menominee in American Legion baseball played Tuesday at Haley Memorial Field in Marquette on Tuesday.

The Blues collected five singles in a 12-5 victory, then could only eke out three singles but won 9-5 in the nightcap.

Here are details from the games:

Blues 12, Menominee 5

In the opener, Marquette took advantage of six Menominee errors while collecting seven walks and stealing nine bases to put together back-to-back five-run rallies.

The Blues broke a scoreless tie with five in the bottom of the third after Owen Cardinal hit a two-run single, Easton Miller an RBI single and Blake Walther and Isaac Sarles RBI ground outs.

Five more runs came home in the fourth after Walther hit a two-run single, an error produced two more runs and Cardinal hit into a double play to also score a run.

Marquette starting pitcher Morgan Robar threw two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out two. But it was reliever Jake Toyras who got the victory, going one inning and allowing two runs on one hit and three walks as he also fanned two.

Nick Pantti, Gibson Jezewski and Braiden Noskey added single innings on the mound for the home squad.

Though Menominee had five hits and drew seven walks, the Blues didn’t commit an error to keep the scoring damage to a minimum.

Gable Buck took the pitching loss for Menominee, going three innings and giving up six runs — four earned — on four hits and three walks while K’ing nine.

Menominee’s Blake Malke was the only batter with more than one hit as he went 2 for 3 with a run scored.

In addition to Cardinal, Miller and Walther, Marquette teammates Toyras and Logan Peterson also had singles. Cardinal and Walther each finished with three RBIs as Cardinal scored twice and Walther once. Miller also scored a run, while Peterson and Robar each had two steals, while Miller and Sarles each walked twice.

Blues 9, Menominee 5

In the nightcap, the numbers were similar for Marquette — Menominee committed five errors as the Blues drew nine walks and stole a whopping 11 bases.

Five of the steals were by Peterson, giving him seven for the day, as he went hitless but drew a walk and scored twice.

Marquette built a 6-0 lead after four innings as Blues starter and winner Carsen Belanger didn’t allow a hit and just one walk with two strikeouts in three innings work. Teammates Dallas Cobe and Walther went the final three innings, combining to give up five runs on five hits with seven walks and seven K’s.

The Blues’ big rally was a three-run third as an error produced two runs and a passed ball another.

Cardinal, Miller and teammate Aiden Steele each had Marquette singles, while Cardinal and Miller had the only RBIs. Toyras drew two walks while Steele had two stolen bases.

Menominee, which collected five singles, again had the only batter with multiple hits as Torin Davis went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Teammate and starting pitcher Chase Monette took the pitching loss, going 1 2/3 innings and allowing one run on one hit and three walks as he fanned two.
