MARQUETTE — Stella Dehlin and Sam Dehlin were double winners at the Marquette Invitational high school alpine skiing meet held at Marquette Mountain on Monday.

Between them, the Dehlins swept all four individual titles at the meet — slalom and giant slalom for boys and for girls.

Stella Dehlin, a freshman, had the closer calls, though the top three finishers in her races were also Sentinels skiers.

Sam Dehlin, a senior, had some wider margins of victory over runner-up Eli Heathman of Houghton in each of his boys disciplines.

The Dehlins also led Marquette to team victories by fairly wide margins.

In the girls meet, the Sentinels scored 21 points to 96 for runner-up Ironwood, 104 for Norway and 110 for Houghton.

The MSHS boys totaled 27 points as Houghton had 58 and Ironwood 102.

The Sentinels have one more regular-season meet scheduled for Pine Mountain in Iron Mountain and hosted by Norway High School on Monday, according to the Marquette ski schedule available online at marquetteathletics.com.

After that, Schuss Mountain in downstate Mancelona hosts the Sentinels’ MHSAA regional meet on Monday, Feb. 10, with the Upper Peninsula Finals meet scheduled back at Pine Mountain on Monday, Feb. 17.

The MHSAA state championships are scheduled for Nubs Nob near Harbor Springs on Monday, Feb. 24.

Stella Dehlin leads girls

Stella Dehlin’s narrowest victory came in giant slalom, where her two-run total was just five-hundredths of a second — that’s 1/20 of a second — faster than runner-up Madalyn Croney, also from Marquette.

Incredibly enough, despite the tiny margin of victory, Dehlin actually had the fastest opening run and fastest second run by even smaller margins.

Dehlin’s runs were 29.45 and 29.09 seconds for a total of 58.54 seconds. Croney’s runs were 29.49 and 29.10 — four-hundredths of a second difference in the first run and one-hundredth of a second in run No. 2 — to give her a total time of 58.59.

Marquette completed a top-five sweep in GS when the Sentinels’ Ava Stern was third with runs of 30.02 and 29.41 for a 59.43 total, Lucy Stern fourth with 29.93 and 29.98 for 59.91, and Anna Bernard fifth with 30.51 and 30.60 for 1:01.11.

Just for insurance, MSHS’ Lyla Isaacson was eighth with runs of 31.20 and 31.54 for a 1:02.74 total, while teammate Cadyn Grim was 11th with runs of 31.65 and 33.05 for 1:04.70.

Also from Marquette, Jillian Star was 16th in 1:07.98, Ruby Burridge 17th in 1:10.12 and Anna Melka 18th in 1:10.86.

Stella Dehlin won the slalom with what comparatively seems like a wide margin of 0.39 of a second, making runs of 38.22 and 37.44 seconds for a 1:15.66 total.

Lucy Stern, making the fastest opening run of 38.00 seconds, was overall runner-up with a second run of 38.05 for a 1:16.05 cumulative time.

Completing Marquette’s top-three sweep in this event, Ava Stern had runs of 38.69 and 38.40 for a third-place total of 1:17.09.

Also in slalom, MSHS’ Bernard was fifth with runs of 40.77 and 40.16 seconds for 1:20.93, Grim seventh with 40.30 and 41.85 for 1:22.14, and Isaacson eighth with 41.76 and 40.50 for 1:22.26.

Continuing on for the Sentinels, Star was 12th with runs of 43.89 and 44.51 for 1:28.40, Croney 14th with 39.05 and 54.54 for 1:33.59, and Burridge 15th with 48.11 and 48.61 for 1:36.72.

Marquette’s Laura Markey was 17th in 1:44.46, Layne Johnson 20th in 2:19.44, and Melka was only able to complete on run and didn’t have a full score.

Sam Dehlin dominant

Sam Dehlin recorded victories of about three-quarters of a second and almost two seconds in his boys sweep.

In GS, he had the two fastest runs, 27.50 and 27.30, for a combined 54.80 seconds.

That beat out Houghton’s Heathman, whose times of 27.97 and 27.55 totaled 55.52 seconds.

The Gremlin runner-up beat out Marquette’s Lake Skytta by just two-hundredths of a second, as the Sentinels racer had runs of 27.86 and 27.68 for 55.54 seconds and third place.

MSHS actually filled up a majority of the top 10, with Benjamin Kuhl fourth with runs of 28.12 and 28.13 for 56.25, Brady Audette sixth with 28.83 and 28.53 for 57.36, Conner Henry eighth with 29.59 and 28.54 for 58.13, and Jude Balding ninth with 29.62 and 29.54 for 59.16.

The Sentinels also grabbed plenty of spots in the second 10. Sam Uchytil was 11th with runs of 31.61 and 31.01 for 1:02.62, Garrett Crimmins 13th with 32.35 and 32.12 for 1:04.47, Connor Dunn 14th with 36.51 and 28.85 for 1:05.36, and Nolan Dixon 17th with 32.98 and 32.94 for 1:05.92.

Sam Dehlin really dominated in slalom, where each of his runs were close to a half-second better than the rest of the field. He opened with 32.88 and added 32.78 seconds for 1:05.66, well ahead of Heathman’s runner-up runs of 34.40 and 33.20 for 1:07.60.

The Sentinels grabbed the next four spots — Skytta was third with 34.62 and 34.69 for 1:09.31, Kuhl fourth with 34.96 and 35.05 for 1:10.01, Henry fifth with 36.04 and 34.16 for 1:10.20, and Audette sixth with 35.64 and 35.15 for 1:10.79.

In addition, Balding was ninth with 39.82 and 38.27 for 1:18.09, Dunn 10th with 37.13 and 43.56 for 1:20.69, Uchytil 11th with 40.51 and 40.21 for 1:20.72, Dixon 14th with 43.97 and 45.14 for 1:29.11, and Crimmins 15th with 45.28 and 44.18 for 1:29.46.

Jameson Bishop didn’t finish one run and didn’t post a total time score.
