Northern Michigan University’s Grayden Slipec this week’s top CCHA rookie
MARQUETTE — Freshman Grayden Slipec of the Northern Michigan University earned more than a personal distinction when he scored his first career collegiate goal on Saturday night in Houghton against Michigan Tech.
His three-point weekend against the Huskies earned him the CCHA Rookie of the Week honor.
The 5-foot-10, 190-pound forward from Surrey, British Columbia, finished with two goals and an assist, all coming in the second game of the home-and-home series as he had a hand in every goal scored by the Wildcats during the weekend.
Slipec moved into a tie for the team scoring lead with five points, a number matched by Tynan Ewart.
Slipec is one of five Wildcats to have scored two goals so far, and his three assists is tied for third with Joe Schiller as Ewart and Jakub Altrichter each have four. Slipec’s 12 shots on goal ties him for second on the NMU club with Rasmus Larsson and only trails the 18 taken by captain Tanner Latsch.
Among all CCHA rookies last weekend, Slipec led with his two goals and three points as he recorded eight shots, including four on goal, and a block while defending.
Both goals Saturday came on the power play, giving him two-thirds of the team’s special-teams goals this season.
