MARQUETTE — Marquette Senior High School runners and coaches did exceedingly well when Upper Peninsula cross country awards were recently announced by the U.P. Cross Country Coaches Association.

Marquette had four of the seven spots on the boys’ All-U.P. Dream Team, along with two additional positions on the associated Dream Team honorable mention list. That doesn’t even include the Sentinels being named the U.P. Division 1 Boys Team of the Year.

And the Marquette girls also had a representative on that All-U.P. Dream Team as the two Sentinels teams’ coach, Derek Marr, was named U.P. Coach of the Year in Division 1.

A whole host of runners, both boys and girls, were also named all-state and All-U.P. by the group.

On the boys All-U.P. Dream Team were Marquette’s Seppi Camilli, James Barch, Lucas Ballard and Rorik Holmquist. Just missing that group as honorable mentions were teammates Peter Argeropoulos and Chase Thomsen.

Munising’s Danny Goss joined the boys Dream Team along with U.P. Boys Runner of the Year Gabe Litzner of Sault Ste. Marie and Kalvin Kytta of Chassell.

The Sentinels’ Ella Fure was her team’s pick for the Girls’ All-U.P. Dream Team as she was joined on that honor squad by Abby Taylor and Samantha Taylor of Newberry.

The balance of that group was U.P. Girls Runner of the Year Talya Schreiber of Pickford, Tessa Rautiola and Sela Niska of Houghton, and Aubrey Smith of Ironwood.

Just after them on the Dream Team honorable mention were Roman Trevino Peterlin of Houghton and Molly McNamara of Engadine.

The other Coach of the Year winners were Sam Kilpela of Jeffers in Division 2 and Tracy Germain of Engadine in Division 3.

The remaining Teams of the Year were the Houghton girls in Division 1, Jeffers boys and Baraga and Hancock girls in Division 2, and Engadine boys and Ewen-Trout Creek girls in Division 3.

Marquette’s Camilli, Barch, Ballard, Holmquist, Peter Argeropoulos, Thomsen and Evan Balko made the all-state list in boys’ Division 1, as did Fure, Maija Maki-Warne, Monet Argeropoulos, Evelyn Grant, Chloe Miller and Eryn Veverka for the Sentinels in girls’ Division 1.

Negaunee’s Nori Korsman and Marlee Plaxco made the Division 1 girls all-state list.

In Division 2, Gwinn’s Thomas Jenkins, Munising’s Dan Goss and Blake Lakosky, and Manistique’s Ben Gilroy and Kavin Jackson were included on the boys all-state list; while Ishpeming’s Laynie Korpi; Munising’s Olivia Cotey, Dayne Behning and Kate Mattson; and Baraga’s Princess Pierre, Sophie DesRochers and Breyelle Bowers made the girls all-state honors listing.

In Division 3, Newberry’s Sam Rahilly earned boys’ all-state, while schoolmates Abby Taylor and Samantha Taylor earned that distinction in girls all-state.
