Northern Michigan University vs. Michigan State Spartans men’s basketball tickets on sale Monday
MARQUETTE — General admission tickets for the Northern Michigan University men’s basketball game against Michigan State go on sale Monday morning.
Known as the Superior Dome Showdown, the game will be held in the Wildcats’ football stadium as a one-time exhibition that celebrates both school’s basketball programs.
The game is set to be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13, with a basketball floor — likely the one used for decades as an overlay on the ice surface at the Berry Events Center — placed atop the football field.
It’s a temporary floor that may not be used much anymore with Northern men’s and women’s basketball moving to a new permanent home in the Vandament Arena, which already has a basketball floor as its regular surface.
Tickets for the Superior Dome Showdown become available starting at 10 a.m. Monday, and can be obtained online at tickets.nmu.edu or in person at the NMU Ticket Office, which has relocated to just inside the main entrance to the dome. Tickets will not be available to purchase by phone.
The event not only celebrates both schools’ basketball programs, but the legacy of Northern alumnus Tom Izzo, who has been head coach of the Spartans since 1995, won an NCAA Division I championship and was named to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016.
Izzo, 69, played basketball at NMU and graduated from there in 1977. One of his first jobs post-graduation was head coach of the Ishpeming High School boys basketball team for a season in the late 1970s.
Radio and potential TV broadcast information for the game has yet to be announced.
