MARQUETTE — For the second straight week, Northern Michigan University redshirt freshman forward Tanner Latsch has earned a player of the week award from the Wildcats’ league, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

This week, he was named CCHA Rookie of the Week after scoring two of NMU’s three goals in a two-game nonconference series at nationally ranked Arizona State. Northern lost both games, 3-2 and 5-1.

A week earlier in the Wildcats’ season-opening series at Minnesota-Duluth, Latsch was named both the league’s Rookie of the Week and Forward of the Week for his six-point weekend that included five goals.

At Arizona State, the 6-foot-2, 190-pound native of downstate Twin Lake netted a goal each night to keep his goal-scoring streak alive at four games. And both goals were on the power play. Both his six power play tallies and seven overall goals are tops in NCAA Division I.

Latsch is also eighth among all players in the nation with his eight points and sixth in points per game at 2.00.

And his point total leads all rookie players nationally.

For the Wildcats, he has scored seven of their 13 goals and six of their eight power play goals in four games so far.

A look at the CCHA weekly awards list at ccha.com shows Latsch as the only player to win more than one award in the three weeks honors have been handed out.

Another Northern honoree was sophomore defenseman Josh Zinger after the Duluth series when he was named CCHA Defenseman of the Week.

Though Zinger didn’t earn an award this week, he was credited with an assist on each of Latsch’s goals at Arizona State, giving him six this season.

The other CCHA honorees this week were Liam Malmquist of St. Thomas as Forward of the Week, Kyle Looft of Bemidji State as Defenseman of the Week and Josh Sibell of St. Thomas as Goaltender of the Week.

This weekend, the Wildcats (0-3-1) play their home- and CCHA-opening series when they host Ferris State at 7 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday at the Berry Events Center in Marquette.
