MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University has named Dylan Chmura as offensive coordinator for this fall’s season.
He will be working with fifth-year NMU head coach Kyle Nystrom.
The Waukesha, Wisconsin, native played at Michigan State University from 2013-16, coming to the Spartans as one of the nation’s top tight end recruits and helping MSU win a pair of Big 10 championships that included victories in the 2014 Rose Bowl and 2015 Cotton Bowl.
Following the 2016 season, he joined the Spartans coaching staff as a student coach, assisting with Michigan State’s offensive line and tight ends.
His coaching career next took him to Fresno State from 2017-18, working with offensive linemen to earn all-conference honors. In 2018, Fresno ranked in the top five nationally in fewest quarterback sacks allowed while capturing the Mountain West championship. He moved on to the University of Iowa from 2019-20, working with one of the Big 10’s top offensive lines there.
He then came to NMU prior to the 2021 season, again working with the offensive line and tight ends who have played a key part in Northern’s offensive success. This will be his second year on the Wildcats’ coaching staff.
“I’m extremely excited and thankful for the opportunity Coach Nystrom has given me to be the leader of this offense and can’t wait to continue to help our players improve daily,” Chmura said in an NMU news release about his hiring.
Chmura is the son of Green Bay Packers tight end great Mark Chmura, who played in two Super Bowls, won Super Bowl XXXI in 1997 and was inducted into the Packer Hall of Fame in 2010, according to Mark Chmura’s Wikipedia website.
