MARQUETTE — Marquette Senior High School and the Superiorland Kiwanis have announced that volleyball player Maria Millado and boys cross country runner Carson VanderSchaaf have been named MSHS Student-Athletes of the Month for November.

Millado, a senior, was honored for her sparkling final season with the school’s varsity volleyball team that compiled a 33-6-1 record and second consecutive undefeated season in the Great Northern Conference.

She was named the GNC Player of the Year and also earned all-region honors from the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association. Millado was recognized as one of the top volleyball scholar-athletes in the country when the American Volleyball Coaches Association named her to the First Team for its AVCA Best & Brightest Award.

She leaves the MSHS volleyball program with four school records — most digs in a season and most blocks in a match, season and career.

Millado is now playing with Marquette’s varsity girls basketball team and in the spring plans to participate in track and field. She is a member of the school-record 400-meter relay team in girls track.

Academically, Millado has a 4.23 cumulative grade-point average and is vice president of the National Honor Society. While still undecided about what college or university she will attend following graduation, she intends to pursue a degree in biology or another program in the medical field.

VanderSchaaf, a junior, had an outstanding season as part of the Marquette boys cross country team.

After an injury kept him out of the team’s first four meets this fall, he returned for the final six. It concluded with him winning the boys race at the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Division 1 finals.

In his six races, he placed no lower than sixth, including a runner-up finish at the Great Northern Conference championships. As a team, the Redmen put together a second straight undefeated season and third consecutive U.P. Division 1 championship.

VanderSchaaf’s performances earned him all-state, academic all-state, All-U.P. Dream Team and All-GNC honors. This was the second straight year he earned those accolades.

He also participates on the MSHS boys track and field team, where he is the reigning MHSAA U.P. Division 1 champion in the 3,200-meter run.

In the classroom, VanderSchaaf owns a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA. Outside school, he enjoys mountain biking, swimming and competing in triathlons.

Though still a year away, Carson’s post-graduation plans are to continue both his education and athletics at the college level.
