Where’s Waldo?

Where’s Waldo is a wonderful children’s puzzle book many of us read with our children. he challenge is to find Waldo hidden amid countless images of people and objects. The reward is when they discover Waldo. More than fun, this game builds perception skills, persistence, and focus.

To illustrate the point, where’s U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman? It’s rumored he’s somewhere here in District One while on recess. But, where is our “Waldo?” Inquiries at his regional offices have turned up few leads. There are rumors and speculations he was seen here in the UP, but where? Is he at a private meeting with donors or somewhere glad-handing with a few veterans? Who knows?

As our Congressional Representative why doesn’t Mr. Bergman announce his visits ahead of time? Wouldn’t this avail the public with a rare opportunity to meet with him, ask questions, and find out what’s going on? Why hasn’t Bergman held any town halls since 2017? Why has he dodged other invitations to show up at non-partisan gatherings? Is it any wonder that we, his constituents, are forced to shame him with mock town halls which he calls a “stunt.”

The simple truth is that Mr. Bergman feels it’s unnecessary because he is a “shoo-in.” He no longer has to campaign among the people to keep his job. His MO is “dash in” and “dash out.” Since we pay his salary, it’s important to know his compensation for representing all the people of District One. According to Wikipedia, Mr. Bergman is paid $174,000 per year. In addition, there are other perks under the MRA (Members Representational Allowance) which facilitate his duties.

Mr. Bergman, we pay your salary in good faith and we deserve your presence at our town halls. It is our right and your duty to attend community forums when and where possible. This Saturday you have a cameo appearance with Marquette Republicans at the Holiday Inn. This safe conference format shields you from the concerns, questions, and worries of the larger community. You defend your refusal to hold a town hall because you feel it is a waste of your time. You say participants may get unruly, and argumentative. As a veteran, it’s hard to believe you would be afraid of a few senior citizens. However, what you are afraid of are the questions that will be asked and the answers you will undoubtedly struggle to provide. Where’s Waldo?
