What we need
To the Journal editor:
When I went to graduate school in 2000, we were heading into the information age. The future looked bright. We could be smarter faster. Now we are in the disinformation age. I’ve left social media — it’s not a healthy place. It’s certainly not a reliable source for information. In our thirst to know more faster, we’ve lost our sense of balance.
And so, little local print newspaper, I turn to you. You are flawed, but so am I. You are at least tangible and as information online gets scrubbed, tangibility is something. You will likely print this letter and give voice to anyone else who bothers to write a coherent letter.
I feel sick about the dismantling of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), but that’s just the piece of the elephant that hits closest to my home. This can’t be a letter about saving libraries and museums, it’s got to be about the whole elephant that is taking down this county.
I know impeachment didn’t work the first two times, but that doesn’t mean we need to give up. Perhaps it’s an instance of third time’s a charm. Or maybe there’s a path I don’t see. He’s not playing by the rules; if there are no rules, how is the game won? Destroy the game? Or oust the other player? Or just don’t play with him any longer?
So Jack Bergman, is this what you signed up for? A dismantling of the federal government agency by agency? Is this why you keep supporting him? Is this why you will only talk to a “friendly” crowd and don’t show up to listen to your constituents?
You, sir, are getting old. You will not live forever. Neither will he. I suppose I’m not making friends with you by calling you out, but at least I am being honest with you.
You are in a position where you could make a difference. Swapping out free trade for oligarchy, safety for fear, and education and research for smoke and mirrors is not making this country great. The goliath Trump train of destruction needs a brave individual with a slingshot. Someone within range. You could be that person. Your weapon is your voice in congress. The president is an enemy of the state. Tell the people next to you. Tides change.
