To the Journal editor:

Unfortunately for America, the topic of the week is once again tariffs.

On April 9, hours before announcing a rollback of tariffs, Trump, posted on Truth Social, “BE COOL! Everything is going to work out well. The USA will be bigger and better than ever before!”

“THIS A GREAT TIME TO BUY!!! DJT”

This announcement caused the stock market to soar 12.1%, the largest single gain since 2021. The Dow jumped 7.8%, the biggest one day increase in five years.

Those who took his advice were big winners hours later when he announced the tariff rollback, including the 13 billionaires in his administration.

This is the very definition of insider trading at the highest levels of government.

Conflict of interest, taking advantage of insider information, using tremendous financial resources that the rest of us can only dream of.

Trump later said that he wrote the earlier statement “from our hearts.”

I’m assuming that is the “Royal We” that he is referring to.

The Stock Act of 2012 made it illegal for Congress members and anyone who is a part of the Executive Branch to take part in insider trading.

This is the United States of America, the home of the free and the brave, where anyone is supposed to have the opportunity to be successful through ambition, skill, and hard work.

We already went through the difficulties of ending slavery, getting rid of the head tax that allowed only the wealthy to vote, and gaining the right to vote for women and minorities.

We already went through the age of the robber barons and the Great Depression.

Getting fabulously wealthy has always been connected, not only to intelligence, hard work and luck, but also to ruthlessness and being hard hearted towards others who were not so fortunate.

This is nowhere more true than in the Upper Peninsula where copper barons from the east coast created wealth for themselves by exploiting immigrants.

That’s why a hard fought labor battle took place.

What Trump and his billionaire friends are doing is not okay.

Trump is not a “very stable genius.”

He’s a user at the highest level of government.
