Rep must act
To the Journal editor:
U.S. Rep. Jack Bergman, R-Watersmeet, must take a stand to protect Michigan farmers, American workers, and U.S. global leadership by restoring USAID as an independent agency.
The reckless dismantling of USAID is not only causing famine and instability worldwide but is also devastating Michigan’s economy, especially its agriculture sector.
Michigan farmers rely on USAID programs that purchase American-grown food to provide lifesaving aid abroad.
The current freeze on these programs means American crops are sitting in warehouses while starvation spreads in places like Myanmar and Sudan.
Meanwhile, USAID job losses have already cost over 11,500 Americans their livelihoods.
USAID has always been a bipartisan force for good, supported by Republican and Democratic presidents alike. Rep. Bergman must fight to protect American farmers, Michigan’s economy and the dedicated public servants who serve our nation.
The cost of inaction will be measured in lost jobs, weakened global influence, and unnecessary suffering.
Sincerely,
