Labor Day on tap

To the Journal editor:

Labor Day is a national holiday to honor all working people. Previous labor activists pushed for the holiday to recognize that it was workers who were behind America’s prosperity.

Please join the Marquette Alger County Labor Council and the Upper Peninsula Regional Labor Federation on Sept. 3 in Negaunee for a Labor Day parade and picnic.

The parade of organized labor affiliates starts at 11 a.m. marching together in solidarity down Iron and Rail Streets. A picnic from noon to 4pm will be at the Jim Thomas Pavilion and Jackson Park. All are welcome! The theme this year is “Labor Votes! It is better in a union!”

Voters believe unions have a positive impact on workers and on the economy at large, including worker safety, pay, hours, job security and benefits for workers.

Organized labor stands with candidates and elected officials that stand with workers.

In 2016 Donald Trump told us he would stand with workers. He lied. The difference now is that he has a record he can’t hide from and that record was catastrophic for workers.

Former President Trump spent four years in office weakening unions and working people while pushing tax giveaways to the wealthiest among us. He stacked the courts with judges who want to roll back our rights on the job.

He made us less safe at work. He gave big corporations free rein to lower wages and make it harder for workers to stand together in a union. The … Project 2025 agenda will continue anti-worker policies:

≤ Banning unions for public service workers (page 82).

≤ Firing civil service workers and replacing them with Trump anti-union loyalists (page 80).

≤ Letting bosses eliminate unions mid-contract (page 603).

≤ Letting companies stop paying overtime (page 592) and allowing states to opt out of federal overtime and minimum wage laws (page 605).

≤ Eliminating child labor protections (page 595).

≤ Urging Congress to pass Sen. JD Vance’s bill to let employers create their own sham company-run unions (page 599).

The AFL-CIO announced enthusiastic support for the Harris-Walz ticket. Harris and Walz are principled fighters and labor champions who will stand up for working people. They will be fighting every day to improve the lives of workers in communities across America.

Gov. Walz isn’t only an ally to the labor movement, but also our union brother with a deep commitment to a pro-worker agenda.

The labor movement stands united behind the Harris-Walz ticket, and we are ready to help lead the effort to defeat Donald Trump, JD Vance, and their anti-worker Project 2025 agenda in November.

When we elect pro-worker candidates, labor wins!
