NMU does great job honoring MLK’s legacy

This past week saw Northern Michigan University honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with a week full of thoughtful events that promoted community service.

The full week of events was put on by the NMU Office of Diversity and Inclusion with the NMU Black Student Union.

“This year we are actually extending it to a whole week, so we will have more different items as well,”” said NMU Black Student Union President, Marlanaysia Rosser. “So we are … feeding people at the Room at the Inn and giving them meals, we are doing some writing to representatives to create change, making the blankets today and on Friday we are going to package everything up and put them in care packages and also take them to the Room At The Inn.”

Monday saw the week kicked off with the Radical Togetherness — Crafting Kidness sessions where participants made blankets, inspirational cards, freidnship bracelets and other crafts.

The events continued on Tuesday with the Advocacy in Action — Writing for Change event which saw students, faculty and Marquette residents writing letters to state legislators advocating for equitable policies.

On Wednesday, volunteers visited the Room at the Inn in Marquette to prepare and cook a meal for the homeless community.

Thursday was the Pathways to Belonging — Diversity Resource Fair where students were invited to discover opportunities for getting involved and making a lasting impact on campus and beyond by connecting with organizations that champion diversity, equity and inclusion.

Yesterday was the Compassion in Action — Kit Assembly and Delivery event where winter care kits were assembled and delivered to the Room at the Inn.

We applaud Northern Michigan University and all of the volunteers who spent their week working to make their community a better place. Thier activities honored MLK in the best way possible.

Starting at $4.62/week.
