Mary Jayne Hallifax was one of a kind
We would like to take this opportunity to call to readers’ attention the death and life of Mary Jayne Hallifax, age 96, of Munising, who passed Saturday.
Mary Jayne, as she liked to be called, was one of a kind, something of a community chronicler who photographed and reported on all things Munising for many years.
Her photography and writing graced the pages of the Munising weekly before finishing her career here at The Mining Journal.
She spent her entire life in her hometown of Munising, attending Sacred Heart Grade School before graduating from William G. Mather High School in 1946 as valedictorian of her class.
As near as can be determined, it appears her first brush with photojournalism took place in high school where she worked on the yearbook.
From then on, it was unusual to see her without a camera around her neck.
This writing will not attempt to pack in to two columns all that Mary Jayne did and accomplished in her life. Ninety-six years is a very long time, after all and an extremely well written obituary in Tuesday’s Mining Journal summarizes her impact very well.
We’d only echo what her friends and family are, no doubt, saying about her now, that she was an irreplaceable component of Munising life who touched many. And she will be missed.
