January is Muslim American Heritage Month in Michigan
Hat’s off to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for recognizing January as Muslim American Heritage Month, honoring and celebrating the significant roles of Muslim Americans in Michigan and beyond.
“During Muslim American Heritage Month, we recognize and celebrate the profound impact Muslim Americans have had on Michigan’s culture, economy, and communities,” Whitmer said in a written statement. “Let’s honor their achievements, reflect on their history, and recommit to building a Michigan where everyone can thrive.”
Noted Ahmad Alkaabi, a member of the Michigan Immigrant and Refugee Council: “As one of the largest and most diverse Muslim populations in the country, the Michigan Muslim community plays a vital role in driving economic growth, fostering innovation, and enriching the cultural tapestry of our state.”
We couldn’t agree more.
These are trying times for the relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims. Muslims, to some significant degree, have been caught up in the American culture wars.
Fingers of blame are often pointed at a peaceful group of people residing in the southern part of the state, who, it seems to us, simply want to celebrate their culture and religion — in peace.
Has a nice ring, doesn’t it? Peace.
“Michigan is home to a diverse Muslim-American community that has made significant contributions locally and across the country that are enriching and to be celebrated,” said Suzanne Sukkar, Commission on Middle Eastern American Affairs Chair. “Here in Michigan, we proudly celebrate Muslim-Americans, and religious diversity, where people of different faiths live and work together, with respect and in friendship, making our communities stronger.”
To that, we would only add, “Amen.”
