Don’t let the bitter cold get you down

Tired of this cold snap? There are some events on the horizon that can help break those winter doldrums.

The Heikki Lunta Winter Festival is slated to be held from Feb. 7-9 with events all over Negaunee.

“This is a three-day event that is full of fun for all ages,” said Negaunee City Manager Nate Heffron. “If you’re a fan of winter sports, whether participating or spectating, this is the place to be in Marquette County. Don’t get stuck in your winter rut, come forge your adventures in Negaunee.”

There are several new features to the festival this year, including the Meijer Winter State Games opening ceremony event, the cauldron lighting, luging, an open house and cudighi dinner fundraiser at the Negaunee Elks Lodge, a variety of trivia events and live music, a weekend-long hockey tournament, and much more.

On the following weekend, the UP200 is set to make its triumphant return to the region. Race activities are set to begin on Thursday, Feb. 13, and races will begin Friday, Feb. 14 with the Jack Pine 30 on Saturday, Feb. 15.

“UP200 organizers are thrilled to welcome mushers to Marquette,” said Darlene Walch, president of the Upper Peninsula Sled Dog Association. “Many mushers and volunteers are returning to the races this year and we’re looking forward to seeing lots of old friends.”

With the race being canceled the last two years, Walch is hopeful to get the race back on track in February.

“Most sections of trail look great,” she said. “Cold weather solidified boggy areas and water crossings. In Marquette and along the lakeshore through Harvey we could use a bit more snow, but overall, conditions look really good.”

A full slate of events for the UP200 can be seen at up200.org/schedule.

We are excited for some fun winter activites and to see the mushers take to the trails once again, and we know a lot of other Yoopers are looking forward to it as well. These events are a great way to kick the winter blues.

Starting at $4.62/week.
