Christmas is coming but still time to shop local merchants
Christmas is about three weeks away and we know there are quite a few people who haven’t yet finished checking off all the names on their holiday shopping lists.
We encourage everyone to consider buying local rather than from a faraway online e-shop with express shipping.
Those dollars spent locally are a huge boost to the community, giving return in keeping these local shops open and helping to keep your neighbors employed.
A study from Michigan State University reports that $73 of every $100 at a local business stays in the community compared to $43 remaining in the area when spent at a national chain store.
There are numerous shops locally that offer products manufactured in the Upper Peninsula or created by U.P. craftspeople. We hope those people looking to put the finishing touches on their Christmas shopping will take a look at those places.
We appreciate the convenience and the selection offered by chain stores and we’re glad they are a part of the community. But this time of year can be vital to the survival of locally owned shops which is why we hope many holiday gift dollars end up in the coffers of “Mom and Pop” stores in our area.
In addition to storefronts, many local artists and musicians offer products for sale. Those also are great purchases this holiday season.
If given the opportunity, please support local artists and musicians whenever you are able.
Neighbors shopping from neighbors is a trend we’d like to see continue all through the year, most especially at Christmas.
