Michael Orhanen, DDS

MARQUETTE, MI – Michael Ty Orhanen, DDS, age 74, entered eternal life Tuesday, April 15, 2025, at Mill Creek Assisted Living Facility.

Born August 19, 1950 in Marquette, the son of Taisto and Miriam (Anttila) Orhanen, Michael was raised in Manistique and graduated from Manistique High School in 1968. He went on to attend Northern Michigan University, and after three years, was accepted early into the University of Michigan’s School of Dentistry. Also he completed his Bachelor’s Degree at NMU over two summers while studying dentistry, and earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from the University of Michigan in 1975.

Michael’s dental career was as dynamic and dedicated as he was. He began working in a dental clinic in Switzerland for a year, followed by a year of practice in Ludington, Michigan. He eventually settled in Marquette, where he established his own dental practice and served the community for 38 years.

Michael was passionate about giving back. He traveled the world, not only for the love of adventure, but also as part of a volunteer organization that provided free dental care in South America and Africa. At home, he found joy in working with flowers, sunbathing on his decks, and spending time at his lake house, pontooning and gardening among his favorite ways to relax.

A talented musician, Michael was a longtime member of the Blue Notes Drum and Bugle Corps, the Marquette City Band, and the Negaunee City Band, dedicating over 30 years to performing and sharing music with his community.

Michael will be remembered for his perfectionism, persistence, and generosity. He was fun-loving, friendly, social, and never one to accept failure, traits that made him loved by so many. In addition he was a member of the Mason organization which supports St. Judes Children’s Hospital.

He is survived by his sister, Susan (Robert) Hewitt of Marquette; his brother, Jon (Binky) Orhanen of Gladstone; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Peter Orhanen.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Messiah Lutheran Church on Wednesday, April 23, beginning at 3:00 pm until the time of service at 4:00 pm. A masonic service will take place at 4:00 pm followed by a church service with Pastor Molly Hunter officiating. A reception will follow at American Legion Post 44. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a charity of the donor’s choice.
