Janet Havel

BIG BAY, MI-Janet L. Havel, affectionately known to her family as “Grandma Pie”,96, of Big Bay, entered eternal life on April 18, 2025 at her home surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice.
Janet was born February 8, 1929 in Marinette, Wisconsin to Roy and Margaret (Philipps) Meyers. She was raised in Marinette and graduated from Wausaukee High School in 1946. She worked at the credit bureau in Marinette before marrying the love of her life, Edward H. Havel Sr., at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Welsh, Wisconsin November 6, 1948. Edward and Janet lived in L’anse, Michigan for a time and later moved to Seney, Michigan. In 1956 they relocated to Big Bay, Michigan where they would raise their family.
Janet was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting, and most of all raising her family. She was the bookkeeper for the family logging business, Havel Pulp Contractors, for many years. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Big Bay and the Negaunee VFW Post Auxiliary. She also volunteered at Bay Cliff Health Camp, something that she enjoyed immensely.
Janet is survived by her caring daughter-in-law, Lois Kay Havel. Her loving grandchildren, Brad (Becky) Havel, Lori (Tom) Durand, Tasha Havel, Lindsey (John Wright) Havel, Michael (Amy) Havel Jr., Lucas (Jessica) Havel, and Chris (Amy) Havel.
She is also survived by her greatest joys, great grandchildren – Tucker and Tanner Havel, Emersyn and Payton Nelson, Austin and Alex Durand, Reid Grobar, Carson and Jack Ingersoll, Maddy Wright, Eli and Addison Havel, Boden, Roscoe and Bailey Havel, Alexis and Camila Tierrablanca, Zoie, Nolan, Margaret, Olivia Havel, and two great-great grandchildren, Brynlee and Brantley Foress; sisters-in-law, Pat Meyers and Jesse Meyers as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Margaret Meyers, her husband Edward Havel Sr., her sons, James Havel, Michael Havel Sr., Edward Havel Jr., and an infant daughter. She was also preceded in death by siblings Elaine Anderson, Elwood Meyers, Glenn Meyers, Loren Meyers and Robert Meyers.
Visitation will be held Saturday, May 3, 2025 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Big Bay from 10am until noon. A funeral mass will be celebrated at noon with Fr. Brandon Oman officiating. A luncheon will follow the mass at the church. Interment will take place at the Big Bay Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Camp UPeninsulin (a summer camp for Type 1 Diabetic youth) or to Bay Cliff Health Camp.
The family would like to thank everyone at Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice, UP Health Systems Marquette, and Powell Township First Responders for all of their help and support.
