Daniel Cook

MARQUETTE MI – Daniel Walter Cook, age 72, of Marquette, passed away on March 31, 2025, at Trillium House in Marquette, in the loving care of his family and caregivers of Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice. He left this world surrounded by love, leaving behind cherished memories and a lasting impact on all who knew him.

Born on August 13, 1952, in Marquette, the son of Walter and Ann (Blemberg) Cook, Dan was raised in Marquette. He was a funny, anxious, and talented artist who had a deep love for his family. He was known for his generosity, warmth, and unwavering trustworthiness. Whether through his words of wisdom, his acts of kindness, or his sense of humor, Daniel brought light into the lives of those around him.

Dan graduated from Marquette Senior High School in 1970. After high school, he served in the Army National Guard from 1970 to 1976. On July 14, 1973, he married the love of his life, Marilyn Menucci, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and partnership.

Dan dedicated his career to his family business, Cook Sign Service, which was founded by his grandfather, Walter D. Cook, in 1936. After his grandfather’s passing in 1970, the business was taken over by Dan’s father, Walter Cook. Dan started working part-time at the company while attending high school and eventually took over the business, running it alongside his wife, Marilyn, until he retired in 2001. A few years before retirement, Dan and Marilyn spent their winters in Boca Raton, Florida.

Dan also served the Marquette community in many ways, including as a member of the Marquette Board of Appeals, the Janzen House Board, the Salvation Army Board, and the Brownfield Committee. He was an avid fisherman and the first president of the South Shore Fishing Association, which he founded in 2002.

After retiring, Dan became a well-known artist in the Marquette community, generously donating many of his paintings to fundraisers. He exhibited his artwork at Art on the Rocks for many years and took great pride in giving back to the community he loved.

Dan is survived by his beloved wife, Marilyn; his sister, Margaret (Jay) Cook Ellis of Delray Beach, Florida; brother-in-law, Robert Kahl of Marquette; sister-in-law, JoAnn Menucci Moon; brothers-in-law, Steve Moon and Michael Menucci; sister-in-law, Cindy Bell Menucci; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marilyn Cook Kahl.
