Ian Gagnon

Ian was a cherished son, brother, husband, father, teacher, and friend whose quiet strength and sharp wit touched the lives of many.

Born on November 29, 1974, in Laurium, nestled in the upper peninsula of Michigan, Ian embodied the resilient spirit of his hometown. A graduate of Michigan Technological University, he pursued a fulfilling career as a science teacher, inspiring countless students with his vast knowledge and dry sense of humor. Ian had a unique ability to make even the most complex scientific concepts accessible, often sprinkling his lessons with witty remarks that left a lasting impression.

Outside the classroom, Ian was a man of few words but many passions. An avid football and hockey fan, he relished the subtle strategies of the games, often sharing a knowing nod or a sly comment that revealed his deep appreciation for athletic prowess. His stoic demeanor belied a vibrant inner life brimming with creativity and curiosity. He loved the outdoors, camping and fishing on his beloved Lake Superior.

Ian was an accomplished artist, expressing himself through intricate sketches, carvings and watercolor paintings. His artwork reflected his thoughtful nature, a canvas where his keen observations and quiet introspections came to life. Those fortunate enough to view his pieces found themselves drawn into a world where every detail held significance. He shared his talents with great generosity, often painting, carving or creating personalized gifts his family cherishes to this day.

At the heart of Ian’s world was his family. He was the devoted husband of Wendy Joy Gagnon (Weatherdon) and the proud father of Lydia Adair (28), Quentin Reid (21), and Aurora Aila-Pearl (17). His love for them was immense, often shown through understated gestures, a reassuring hand on the shoulder, a quietly humorous remark at just the right moment, or simply being present when it mattered most. Ian’s humor was a cherished hallmark for everyone who knew him, his witty one-liners often catching his loved ones off guard and filling their lives with laughter. Ian and Wendy’s house was like a second home to their family with a continuous open door. It was never uncommon to enter their home and see family and close friends bunked on the couch.

Ian also leaves behind his parents, John and Shirley Gagnon of Ahmeek Michigan, and siblings, Lisa, Shane, Sam, Mandy (Chad) and Laura along with loving in-laws, Brian (Martha), Debra, Emily (Joe), Matthew (Lua), Lindsay (Johnny), John and Michelle(Ben) as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and dear friends who appreciated his steadfast presence and the subtle ways he expressed his care and affection.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Roberta Neimi and his brother-in-law, Lucas Weatherdon.
