MARQUETTE, MI- Michael “Mike” Peter Hruska, 62, of Marquette, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at his home, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on June 7, 1962, in Menominee, MI, Mike was the son of Frank and Margaret (Rasmussen) Hruska. Raised in Menominee, he discovered his passion for golf while working at Riverside Country Club, where he advanced to assistant to Head Golf Professional (Mr. Mike Wietor). Mike Hruska and his parents played a significant role in the club’s growth, and his love for the game never wavered.
A proud graduate of Menominee High School, Class of 1980, Mike made his mark as a talented golfer, shooting a remarkable 69 in the UP high school golf championship finals. The record score for an individual stood in the record books for several decades until recently it was bested. He went on to study business at Ferris State University.
Following college, Mike began his career in the golf industry as general manager of North Shore Golf Club in Menominee. Later, he took a leap into business ownership, purchasing The Ogden Club, a loved establishment he and his wife (Mary) operated. The bar, rich with Packers memorabilia and nautical themes, reflected both his love for Green Bay Packers football and the clubs history as a former sailor’s gathering place.
As a young adult, Mike faced and triumphed over Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, demonstrating the resilience and determination he carried in his life.
His passion for golf ultimately brought him to the Marquette area, where he joined the team at Marquette Golf Club, and was still actively employed. Mike was a long-time and beloved Marquette Golf Club family member. With MGC since June of 2009, Mike’s dedication to the club was evident in every interaction he had with members and guests alike. Whether you were a member checking in for your tee time or a guest who had never played the course, Mike was always ready with a cheerful greeting and valuable advice. He was a true gentleman of the game. His absence will be deeply felt by all, and the void he leaves behind is significant.
In the golf off-season, Mike worked at Tadych’s Marketplace Foods in Marquette. He cherished his co-workers and friendships. Mike was the patriarch of the Hruska family and provided daily care for his beloved sister Kathy in the home they both shared. Beyond his love for golf, Mike was a devoted second-generation Green Bay Packers season ticket holder and an avid reader, having read over 100 books in the past two years alone.
Mike is survived by his sister, Kathy Wenzlaff of Marquette; sister-in-law, Janet Hruska of Marquette; and nieces and nephews: Kenn (Tracy) Hruska of Marquette, Dennis (Theresa) Hruska of Gwinn, Curt (Danae) Wenzlaff of Henderson, NV, Karey (Chris) Brookins of Oklahoma City. OK, Kris (Gale Knight) Kivela of Negaunee Twp, and Kevin (Kristen) Kivela of Lawrence, KS. Great nieces and nephews Macey Grund, Chelsey Markle, Andrew Kivela, and Shelby Kivela.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Frank and Marge Hruska, brother, Ken Hruska, Sr.; sister, Pat Kivela; nephew, John Kivela; and niece and her husband, Pam and Glenn Caron and great-niece Ashley Kivela.
Mike loved his family more than anything, and his family loved him so very much. We will always remember him and may his memory be eternal. A flame burnt out too quickly. His profound loss will be felt by many.
