Gerald O’Dovero

MARQUETTE, MI- Gerald “Jerry” D. O’Dovero passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at the age of 62.

Born in Escanaba, MI on April 17, 1962, to Peter and Lois (Warren) O’Dovero, he was raised in Marquette and graduated from Marquette Senior High School with the Class of 1980.

At the age of 17, Jerry was in a car accident that left him quadriplegic. During his rehabilitation in Denver, he exceeded all expectations, refusing to let his limitations define him. With determination, he found ways to cook, drive, go ocean fishing, and even ski again. A natural problem-solver, he was constantly inventing and improving ways to make life more accessible and fulfilling. He never let challenges stand in the way of his ambitions, living life on his own terms.

After high school, Jerry attended Northern Michigan University, earning a degree in Business and Finance. He worked for the family business, O’Dovero Development, before moving to California, where he settled in San Jose. There, he worked at H&R Block and actively invested in the stock market. During this time, his younger brothers would often stay with him, and he enjoyed their company. A lifelong hockey fan, Jerry especially loved when the Detroit Red Wings defeated the San Jose Sharks.

Jerry was known for his outgoing and charismatic personality. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and truly loved connecting with people. Even in his wheelchair, he was a fantastic dancer, bringing laughter wherever he went. After leaving California, he embraced a free-spirited lifestyle, traveling the country in his van and always making his way back home to Marquette for summers.

He had an incredible ability to turn any situation into a fun one. He despised the phrase “I can’t” and lived by the belief that life should be fully experienced without limitations.

Jerry is survived by his father, Peter E. O’Dovero of Marquette; his siblings, Connie (Mac) McCauley of Sparta, TN, Peter O’Dovero of Michigamme, Jean Temple of Marquette, John (Misty) O’Dovero of Negaunee, James (Laurie) O’Dovero of Marquette, Joseph (Deanna) O’Dovero of Negaunee Township, Jay (Kim Racine) O’Dovero of Marquette, and Paul (Jennifer) O’Dovero of Marquette; along with 31 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lois A. O’Dovero, and his infant brother, Jack E. O’Dovero.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday, February 27, 2025, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Canale-Tonella Funeral Home and Cremation Services, where a funeral service will be held at 5 p.m., followed by a reception.
