Dr. Sean Hendren
MARQUETTE, MI- Dr. Sean Hendren, 38, died peacefully in the early morning on Monday, February 3rd at home with his soulmate Emily and his beloved dog Griffin by his side.
Sean is survived by his wife Emily Wegemer; his three-year-old son Bode; his parents Chris and Jill (Feltheim); his brother Brian (Risa) and their daughter Lily; many extended family members in the Rock Island area, Kansas City, and Tucson; his chosen family of friends; as well as Emily’s family and her parents Jim and Carol Wegemer, who loved Sean as one of their own.
He was born in Atlanta, GA but grew up in Geneva, IL where he graduated from Geneva Community High School. He then attended and graduated summa cum laude from Hope College and then the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine with a teaching distinction. He completed his Emergency Medicine residency at Western Michigan University’s Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine in Kalamazoo, MI, where he was praised by faculty and deeply respected by his peers, who selected him to be one of their three Chief Residents.
Sean and Emily met in fifth grade when Emily moved to the States and started school in the same class as Sean. They were best friends for over 25 years, partners for over 21 years, and married for over 16 years. In every way they were made for each other and shared a love that was loyal, passionate, respectful, silly, generous, and fun. They moved to the UP in 2016 after a camping trip they thought they were taking to say goodbye to the Midwest, but the natural beauty and community of Marquette called them to make it home.
Sean worked as a physician in the Emergency Department of UPHS Marquette, where he was able to do work he excelled at and loved and where many colleagues became life-long friends. In Marquette, Sean became an avid mountain biker, completing and participating in numerous ultra-endurance bike events, including participating multiple times in all 906 Triple Crown events: the Marji, the Crusher, and the Polar Roll. He loved cross-country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and walking in the woods with his family. Sean adored his son Bode and was the most tender, patient, and loving Daddy Bode could ever have had. He loved Bode completely and wished he had had so many more years with him.
In lieu of flowers, Sean asked that anyone who would like to do so, consider donating to support Bode and his future. Check donations can be made out to Bode Hendren-Wegemer and mailed to Emily Wegemer P.0. Box 902 Marquette, MI 49855. Digital donations can be sent via Venmo to <\@>Emily-Wegemer https://venmo.com/u/Emily-Wegemer to be transferred into an account in Bode’s name.
A memorial for Sean will be held in Marquette, MI sometime this summer.
