Sharon Eklund

GREEN BAY, WI- Sharon L. Eklund passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025, at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, WI, at the age of 80.

Born on August 15, 1944, Sharon spent her life dedicated to education, her community, and her family, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her.

Sharon graduated from Eben High School in 1962 and furthered her education at Northern Michigan University. Her passion for education led her to a fulfilling career as a Middle School and; Elementary School Teacher within the L’Anse Public School System, where she was beloved by both her colleagues and students.

Beyond her professional life, Sharon was a pillar of her community. She was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Ishpeming, where she also enjoyed participating in various church activities. Her commitment to service extended to volunteering at the Hanka Homestead Finnish Heritage National Parks site and; museum and with the Baraga and Marquette County Democratic Party.

Sharon’s hobbies were a reflection of her nurturing and loving nature. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, reading, camping, cooking, and baking. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren, cherishing every moment with Melanie, Teddy, Iris, and Andy Gibbs.

She is survived by her son, Joseph (Tammy) Eklund; daughter, Jana Gibbs; sister, Patsy (Don) VanEnkenvort; nieces Nicole and Angela; several great-nieces and nephews; cousins; close friends; and her beloved cat, Katy.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Aillie (Hakala) Johnson, and her brothers, Jerome and Ricky Johnson.

Services to honor Sharon’s life will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, 180 County Rd PPO, Ishpeming, MI 49849, on Friday, January 10, 2025. Visitation will be from 12 PM to 2 PM, followed by the service at 2 PM. Coffee and snacks will follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any organization where you were involved together with Sharon, honoring her spirit of generosity and community involvement. Sharon’s legacy of kindness, dedication, and love will forever be remembered by those she touched.
