Lorraine Cowling
ISHPEMING, MI- Lorraine “Bug” Cowling, age 74, longtime area resident, passed away on Monday January 13, 2025 at her home while in the loving care of her sister Lynette, and Lake Superior Life Care & Hospice.
Lorraine was born in Rush City, MN on July 26, 1950, daughter of the late William Lauer and Louise (Harvey) Solka. She grew up in National Mine, and was a graduate of National Mine High School, class of 1968. Lorraine worked at Woody’s bar in Ishpeming for 28 years.
Bug loved playing the lottery, starting buying tickets in the early 1970’s and finally hit the jackpot on Mother’s Day in 2021 which was one of the most remarkable and exciting experiences in her life. After winning the lottery, she enjoyed giving money to strangers, especially children who she would often slip a twenty while she was out and about. Bug enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews, and loved cheering on the Green Bay Packers.
Lorraine is survived by 2 sisters- Lynette Davis, Patti (Cliff) Lauer-Smith, 1 step-sister- Cher Niemi, nieces and nephews- Terri Lynn Niemi, Denise (Ty) Hyatt, Vince (Kristi) Sestito, Craig Heikkila, Amy (Rick) Conwell, Lee Anderson, Jeanie Anderson, Omer Nevils, along with many, many great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother- Terrance James Lauer, and sister- Pamela Jean Peters, and 3 step-brothers- Terry Ayotte, Al Ayotte and John Bowman.
Lorraine’s family will greet relatives and friends at the Bjork and Zhulkie Funeral Home on Saturday January 18, 2025 from 11:00am until 1:00pm. A memorial service will follow at 1:00pm with Pastor Kevin McIlhany officiating. Interment will take place in the Ishpeming Cemetery in the Spring.
